Alex Henry Double Rifle
« on: September 18, 2021, 06:46:36 PM »
A few years ago I bought a nice Horsley double rifle on auction.   In June and again this week I shot it in the double rifle match at F'ship.   One of the guys that helped with the match got to looking at it and told me that he was the next to last bid on that rifle when it sold.   The more he handled it the more he wanted it.   He tried to buy it from me but I was not interested in selling it, until he kept raising his offer.

One of the dealers had this AH rifle for sale.   So I ended up selling my Horsley and bought this AH.

AH records shows that this is a .451 best double rifle made in 1867.

Nice!!  Can't make out the writing on the inside of the lock.  What's it say?

Beautiful rifle. I'm glad you got your hands on one.
I am the Lead Historian/Firearms Specialist at Rock Island Auction Co., but I am here out of my own personal interests in muzzle loading and history.

THANK YOU for such a compliment. It was these locks from Brazier and Stanton that were my
inspiration to try to make them as closely as possible to this level of quallity. They are what's called
"3 pin locks" and the "pins" are the 3 bridle screws.IF i decide to make any more locks they will be this pattern
internally or like the one that BrentD showed recently which had the screw spacing of the 4 pin drill
gauge I made in 1987.I used only 3 of the 4 positions this fixture has and it looks good.
You mentioned a Horseley gun and in a1998 issue of The Double Gun Journal thre is a picture od a Horseley
double with a magnificent pair of Brazier locks with "5 pin bridles". I think THIS gun started as a muzzle loader and was
later remade into a breech loader.I think all of us who admire grand rank craftsmanship owe gwe the British a thank you and we shpuld drink a toast to these superb crats people.

This is a superb SxS rifle and I am glad to see it now owned by some who knows exactly what it is and appreciates this level of quality,
