Ball molds
« on: September 23, 2021, 02:02:18 AM »
Does anyone have experience in making historical reproductions of 18th C ball molds, and can offer some tips re the process and steps ?   I am in the process of making a ball shaped reamer but could stand some advice on that point as well.  I have an old reamer that I used to make a mold from a soapstone block  a few years ago , and that worked fairly well. The ball produced is pretty good and usable, but the seam is slightly off centre .  Still works well though.

I guess I can take this as a " No "   :)    188 views but no replies. When I mentioned that my soapstone mold has a seam that is slightly off centre, I can better describe this as that the reamer favoured one side over the other a wee bit.  With the renewed interest in forging barrels, I'm a little surprised that hand forged molds aren't included .  I'm going to PM some folks and will share what I found out.
