GOEX Plant Shutting Down?

A friend and I flew up to Evanston, WY on Sep 26 and bought 20 cans of Goex 2F and Olde Eynsford 1 1/2F From Craig Kirkland, owner of Bear River Powder, Goex master distributor , just our normal usage.  We had a very pleasant visit with him for over an hour, and he did not mention this.  I think he did not know this was coming.

Craig is a great guy to deal with, our club has been buying powder in the 25lb bags from him for years, looks like we need to call him tonight and place a big order!

I have been keeping my legal limit of powder since I got back into BP a few years ago and am glad I have enough to last quite a while. Will continue to shoot my small bores a lot and am having a 40 cal flinter built that will see plenty of use. Going to hunt with my 54 Renegade this year but wont be plinking with it as much as I have in past. Checked my powder stock today and was down 5 lbs and was lucky enough to be able to buy 5 Lbs of Goex 3F to resupply.

Everyone please calm down. I don't believe this is going to be the next toilet paper shortage at COSTCO!
 I did need to add to my inventory and was able to get GOEX 3F at $18.00 per pound. Vendors will be limiting how much you can buy but 25 lbs. lots are still available. That price was I pick up at their door. So let's all take a breath and pray someone else picks up the business and keeps it going.

The makers of Swiss and Shutzen put out memo that they would ramp up production and pick up the slack. It wouldn't surprise me if they bought the Goex plant.

 Well if powder jumps up to $60.00 a pound you’ll be able to buy a big bore barrel for about seven bucks. And, a .32 will cost $350.00.

Hungry Horse I agree if supply dries up and prices jump way up those small bores will become more valuable. If I just stick to my 32 Senecas and Cherokees which all like 15 grains of powder for squirrels and 30 yard targets i can fire around 23,000  rounds before buying more powder.

Think again ,my Rice barrel cost $500.00 + and I was happy to get it .Every supplier is out of stock if there's a F involved in black powder other than 1F and the sky is the limit on Swiss and good luck on shipping 2weeks + (on a priority)  letter!!! /Ed

I signed that petition and shared it to my FB page, but will send an actual letter to Hodgdon asking them either to reconsider or to work to find a buyer.  Yes, we have foreign suppliers, but I do not find that particularly reassuring. Just think of what happened to members of the black powder community in South Africa some years back when the government cut off their powder supplies. They briefly had Sannadex, and then that, too, went away.

They are actively looking for a buyer, from my understanding and want to see GOEX in good, passionate hands. Hopefully, the petition shows potential buyers there is still a need for this product.

I agree with Muskrat Mike, we need to calm down a bit. As others have said, either Goex will be bought by someone else or the other manufacturers will pick up the slack. Yes, we will probably have to pay a bit more in the future. I, like everyone else hate to pay more for stuff, but, I  also remember my first job paid $1.00 an hour so there you go. I also understand that 95% of the black powder manufactured goes to the military and to various industries such as demolition and mining. So, I doubt everybody will stop manufacturing black powder completely. However, some posters have pointed out, it is the lack of availability by local dealers due to explosives licensing that keeps people from starting out in black powder, that is really our big threat. I live in Florida, as I understand it, there are only 2 dealers in the entire state that keep it (most of the time) in stock. Pretty hard for a young guy starting out to to deal with that.

It sounds like an opportunity to open a plant in Mexico.  They have a strong fireworks culture.  They already know how.  Labor is cheap.  Willow grow great in their slow moving valley river beds.  The nanny state is less of an issue.  IT seems like a good fit to me.

  I been hoarding the stuff since the 60's , couldn't possibly shoot up all I own now . If worse comes to worse I'll learn to make my own and teach both my boys so they can make theirs when and if they ever finish shooting my hoard . Now that the supply chain for powder will be cut shorter somebody will put caps back on the market in a quantity large enough to hoard .

Those same people will be panic buying black powder and ruining the hobby for the rest of us. If any of you want to think about complaining about the decline of black powder remember that it is circumstances like this that prevent the hobby from being accessible to anyone new. Some poor 20 year old will think about getting a rifle, see there's no black powder available, and then forget about this hobby as he grabs another bucket of 5.56.

You can find threads about this when Goex was bought out some 12 years ago and you can find prophecy about when they closed down other production facilities.

Black powder will be fine, smokeless powder will be fine, guns will be available to Americans, and the same panic waves will continue to happen to the same people over and over again. It's disappointing to see this evidence of how people never learn.

In Australia last year people hoarded toilet paper, as if they could eat it.

One guy tried returning $10,000 worth of toilet paper and sanitiser after things cooled down.

I keep seeing people saying they can't get any powder. It took me 10 minutes on line to find 25 lbs. (in 1 lb. cans) of GOEX 3F and 1 lb. of GOEX 4F at $18.00 per pound. Now I am stocked up for the foreseeable future.

Larry and I bought Olde Eynsford from Bear River powder in Evanston, WY on Sunday, September 26, at $21 a pound. When we heard  on Monday of Goex closing, we phoned an order for more OE. By then Bear River Powder was entirely sold out of Olde Eynsford, and Craig is a Goex Master Distributor.
