Bought a powder horn - old collection
« on: November 22, 2021, 05:42:04 AM »
I don't know anything about powder horns, so I keep away from them.  But this was from a lifelong collector in his late 80s, and he'd had it a long time.  So I figured it was authentic, but again, I don't know.  Can anyone tell me the era and perhaps region of this horn? I can take better pictures if needed.

Great horn! Good on you for finding it and posting it here to be seen. Nice old drawer pull mounted in the flat pine butt plug. That and the faceted spout suggests a NE origin to my eye, at least. It appears that there is something scrimshawed into the upward face. Is this correct and what does it depict? Than  you for sharing your joy!

Thanks, he had a few, and I just had to pick on at random.  I liked the faceted tip so got this one.  He had more, mostly priming horns, some flat.

There is nothing scrimshawed, that is just a black part.  It's very thin, you can see through it when held up to a light.

I fully agree with Dick. The flat, soft wood butt plug and faceted spout, when seen together like this, are strong indicators of a New England power horn. It's a good looking horn.

Your first horn is a very nice piece.  You have a good eye!

Thanks for posting the photos.
