FLINTLOCK WITH ROLLER ON THE FRIZZEN
« on: October 04, 2021, 07:06:01 PM »
Below are a few photos of a New England Rifle from my collection. This rifle was added to the Miller Library back in 2019 so many more photos are available there.

I neglected to mention when the rifle was added to the libray that the lock has a roller frizzen, rather than a roller frizzen spring. I have not seen too may of these and I am wondering what was the time frame for the use of this style of frizzen roller?

Thanks for looking.

Frizzens with rollers seem [to me at least] to be somewhat "splattered" across the years, without a clear time span. They appeared to be a superior design when compared to the more common frizzen spring roller that eventually wore a "dent" in the roller from contacting the small, rounded foot of the frizzen in the same spot all the time, eventually making its action less smooth. With the roller on the foot of the frizzen, it rolled against a flat, smooth surface, keeping the roller round in shape, and a smoother action for a longer period. Perhaps it was a cost factor vs. the frizzen spring roller, but it's hard to see how that made much difference in lock construction costs.

A contemporary lock with a roller frizzen is the L&R Durs Egg, supposedly around 1780s in styling.

I do not have one available. It may take some time to get one taken.

Mr. Westbury: I'm unsure how to access more pictures of this rifle. I wandered around in the archive but need a name or other ID in order to find it. Help??

Perhaps less common than the roller on the spring but not at all rare. It was just another way of doing it. You can also find locks with a roller on the mainspring. These are all contemporaneous.

I have an unsigned Lehigh style smooth rifle that was converted from flint quite early in its life. It has a roller mainspring, and I have always suspected it may have had a roller frizzen as well.
