I went to Jeff Talbert's last Friday. We worked on the butt plate. I took it home and worked on it over the weekend. It's sitting flush.

Jack,
Looks like you did a great job finishing it up.
Good job,
Jeff

Hi,
Very nice you guys. These are a bit more challenging than most long rifle plates.

Thanks Dave! The credit goes to Jeff! There's no way it would have come out this good if I had attempted it myself.

Yep, those fowler and Jaeger butts are a bit of a pain in the butt to get just right. Currently building my turkey gun and the butt took me about 8 hours. I'm sure others do in in a lot less time however, I like this one and there are no gaps.

I presume your talking about the Chambers kit. Start by getting rid of that big hump of wood under the swell of the BP. Otherwise it’s just in your way and you’ll have to gradually remove most of it anyway.
Then get that top extension laying flush and ease it forward as you remove wood from the face of the butt. You should have a minimum amount of wood to remove up top.
Take your time.
Good luck,
Jeff

Well done - I built one last summer. My edges were not so perfect, but I annealed it and hammered it to a perfect fit - an old trick I learned from somebody, somewhere!

I used the TOTW steel version for my English Sporting rifle two years ago. I found out that when it wouldn't go down any further to check the sides of the top extension inlet. They were too narrow. Once I relieved them it sat right down into the inlet. I kept trying to go forward but caught myself before reaching the point of no return. This butt plate didn't have the lug on the top extension that gets pinned so I made one and soldered it on.

Agreed to the above - Here is my Chambers Fowler... Take off the "hump" of uncut wood from the pre carve and settle the plate into the wood - it will make life so much easier - Behind my plate is almost concave.
