Did you cut the dovetail that deep or make the base that thick?

I guess I am not understanding what the problem might be?
The sight's base is .060" thick instead of .050"- so file off .010"?
Maybe you cut the dovetail .060" deep instead of a desired .050"?????

It's still shy of 1/16" deep - is that a problem?

Not sure I understand either but if it were too deep you can shim it with steel shim stock. You can get a set of shim stock from MSC

If the dovetail has a razor thin sliver of light under it with the sight in place I have seen one with that filled up with tinning it with soft solder before installing the sight. If the barrel isnt too thin at that point light taps on the base of the sight might work also. But you might just tin the bottom of the sight base if you had a gap.

I think what you have is OK. I make the slot for the rear sight only .035 deep and then use a dovetail chisel to raise   the metal on both sides and file the raised metal into a molding ....the final bearing height is then   around 1/16"....Fred

We really need to know the caliber and barrel diameter to make a better analysis.  You are probably good.  I would want a minimum of .100" wall thickness between the bore and the bottom of the dovetail.  Like Fred stated earlier, I normally cut my dovetails between .030" and .040".

It's not gonna matter except for looks, as long as it goes in Tight & won't move.  After ya get the barrel & everything browned & back together, take a little KIWI Brown paste shoe polish  & pack some under the sight, wipe off excess & forget it.

2nd option is cut a piece of metal to fit & fill the dovetail & file flush. Move down the barrel 3/4" & cut a new dovetail & start over.

3rd option is to file of the rear sight a bit to make the male part of the dovetail go deeper.  This is prob what I would do.

If this lil glitch is all the issues you have,  you have you are in good shape.

Once ya have the sights fitted, take them back off. Just something to snag your hand while building the rifle.
You won't need them again until you assemble the rifle after it is all blued or browned.

Another option, the way I would go, is just make another sight to fit your dovetail and move on. Why fret over it.
