Just the right fixin's for squirrel stew
« on: September 25, 2009, 10:59:03 PM »
Of course I call this my to the forest squirrel hunting set up.  ;D  Well not exactly a recipe, but one does has to have the right tools, don't they?
Starting out with a fresh small hunting bag of 2 1/2 oz veg tan with a sprinkling of dyes and vinegaroon to get a good dark brown/black color.  With the light weight leather the bag is lined with walnut stained ticking and has a walnut stained piece of vintage feedsack as a backing to the flap (compliments to Rick Sheets, thanks).   There is a small pocket sewn to the back of the bag and along next to that is a small 'hanging pouch" to serve as a ball bag.
To round out the bag is a few accessories.  Just finished a small flattened primer horn featuring with a small turned tip of horn just about 1 1/4 in long.  A small vent pick and a fresh pan brush made from a piece of ebony and some horse hair connected to a piece of braided wax linen.  Of course a small funnel made from Apple to fill the horn.  On the right of the bag is a small roundball pouch (up to a 40 cal) or, if you will, caps.  The antler is hollowed out for up to 40 grains for your powder measure and left it as the natural color.  A piece of braided wax linen is next to apply to the measure.  I'm just not sure if I will attache the measure and the pick and brush combo to the straps yet.  I think I'll do that and allow them to hang just at the right length so one can stick them in the bag without them swinging around.  Enjoy.

Really a nice looking set Gary. I love the flap on the pouch. Mixing the lining fabrics is a nice touch too. Everything about this set is great. Wish I could see it in person.
