Hardwood Charcoal Provider
« on: November 05, 2021, 09:30:10 PM »
I don't know if anyone would be interested in this or not, but I had to replenish my supply of wood charcoal that I use at the University for color case hardening and charcoal bluing. The last place I purchased it from was Berger Brothers, but they apparently have stopped carrying the granular charcoal, Brownells is also out of stock (probably because they buy from Berger Brothers). After doing a bit of research I found a company in California, Lazzari, and they sell a very similar hardwood granular charcoal that is the right mesh size for our purpose.

Lazzari Fuel Company
11 Industrial Way
Brisbane
CA 94005

They call it Lazzari's Powder Charcoal and it comes in random particle size from 3mm to 7mm. Their price is $13.35 per 40 pound bag. I wanted something closer to the 3mm size, so I ordered 4 bags of it thinking I would just use a sieve to get the bigger particles out. As it turns out the stuff I received looks almost identical to the mesh size that Brownells was selling--and I now have several years supply of it on hand. So if you need charcoal this seems to be a good place to purchase from, they ship fast, and were pleasant to work with.

After thinking on this, I wonder if it’s possible to make some similar charcoal from the wood pellets sold for use in a wood stove?

The wood pellets might have binders in them, not sure. Charcoal can be made easy enough, but for the price and the quantity we go through in our program this is a better way to go for us.

Thought wood pellets had some sort of glue in them?

The manufacturing process utilizes extremely high pressure, which actually liquifies the lignin in the wood [ a natural glue ]  which allows the pellets to be formed and then hold their shape. We have a couple of pellet manufacturing plants here, and I've seen the process in operation.  Pretty interesting.

I’ve had excellent results with the granular wood charcoal from Foy’s Pigeon Supply…it’s sold as a feed supplement.  Nice, clean, and consistently sized, and *lots* cheaper than Brownells. Hopefully they still have it, I need a resupply…

Possibly a dumb question but, can you grill with that?

The price is less than half of grilling charcoal in the box stores around me.
