Primitive mold question
« on: November 14, 2021, 01:22:57 AM »
I see many primitive scissors molds offered. They are marked not with the ball size, but with another number, like 170.

Is this the balls per pound the mold casts? If not, does anyone know the significance of the number?

Thanks!

Harry

You are correct.  Antique molds are marked with the number of balls per pound.

I have an old scissors mold that is marked 160 and picked up an old half-stocked percussion rifle that is marked 160 at the muzzle.  James Levy

That is close to 170, Levy.   160 to the pound is .308" and 43.8gr. in pure lead.
