Butt stitches and Drawstrings
« on: November 17, 2021, 06:23:10 AM »
A custom order based on a bag I created a few years ago. The flap on this bag features a folksy, raised butt stitching design. On the front body are two drawstring pouchlets. Past the bound main entry, the roomy gusseted interior has two large, bound top pockets. The strap sports one of my handmade brass buckles meant to be worn "bandolier" style in front. The bag has received a series of light aging techniques that still preserves the integrity of the bag for use.

You continue to outdo yourself. That looks like a Lot of work, beautifully done, it matches the design of the bag.

James, you do outstanding work! Your #7 pricking wheel is just right for the kind of stitch you use. Thanks for the heads up on that

Thanks all.

Dan, for sure the 7 TPI is what I most recommend for everyone and I'm glad to hear its working out for you. It lays well with the needle and thread sizes i recommend with it. Its small enough not to look clunky  but large enough that beginners can start to make progress in consistency.  On this particular bag, the stitches are 10 and 9 TPI depending on the area and I think 8 on the strap attachment to the bag.

Eeeeyow that is beautiful.  On this occasion I opened up the photos and just stared for a minute or two.  Stunning.

I think it is hard for people who do not work with leather to comprehend the skill, patience and hard work that goes into a piece like this.  How many folks in the U.S. could accomplish this?

Outstanding James, and thank you for sharing the photos with us.

God Bless,   Marc

James, I love your craftsmanship not to mention this wonderful bag.  My fingers hurt just looking at all the great stitching et al.  Love the design and overall 'look'.

Thank you all. Its quite an incentive to hear encouraging comments when you work alone in "the dungeon" everyday.  Especially so when I hear from those whose work I also admire and appreciate.

A real Beauty.  Did you document the design or come up with it out of your own creativity?

Beautiful work. But, as a non leather worker, from the title of this thread all I could think of was "loosen your drawstrings, drop your drawers, and get ready for your butt stitches. So, I was glad to see leather work. Nicely done.

There is some magic that is kindled in the mind and soul when a natural material like skin is made into leather then transformed by skilled and artistic hands into a useful object. It really is magic.
