I have to keep reminding myself that gun isn't even stained yet! It's already a showstopper in the white!

Man, you've got some artistic chops and fine carving techniques there. So clean and tasty!

Nice!  But now I feel so devoid of any skills at carving!

Very crisp and endearing.  Well whiskered, I hope, prior to staining?  I hope you use Ferric Nitrate for the stain!

Jeff,
This looks great.    Obvious attention to detail.  Well done.
Hope you bring it to Boonesboro, (if we can get together this winter).  I know everyone would love to see it in person.

Thanks for all the kind comments. They are much appreciated.  I was trying to add more detail to my carving with this one than I have with previous efforts, and I’m pretty happy with the results.  Fortunately I had photos of some great originals from the KRA DVD.

Taylor, I am planning to stain with ferric nitrate and yes it has been well whiskered.

Kevin, I’ll definitely bring it along to Boonesborough if we’re able to get together this year.

Thanks again for looking.
Jeff

Again I say very special. Like so many others have said-very clean carving. Aside from very sharp tools and good eyes, how does a guy get such nice clean carving? Does any burnishing take place?

Very, very nice, Jeff.  I'm looking forward to seeing it in-person at Boonesborough.  (I'm working on getting our little get-together arranged.)

About all I can offer on that would be the importance of low angle lighting to show all the imperfections and then removing wood where needed in the form of lots and lots of tiny slivers with super sharp tools.  (Strop the tools frequently.)  Lighting can make what initially appears to be a smooth finish look more like nothing but peaks and valleys.  Then it’s a matter of shaving away all those tiny peaks.
Some of the bigger areas of background are scraped where the grain allows.
So far I have not burnished any of this, although I may at some point in the staining/finishing process if some grain happens to pop up.

Hope that’s helpful.

Jeff

And that, kids, is what Webster's defines as 'well executed'.  Yikes!   Outstanding work!
