Southern Rifle - Finished! (pics)
« on: September 30, 2009, 03:38:07 AM »
Many thanks to everyone on the forum for putting up with my questions and offering advice during my first build.  I've never met a more helpfull or knowledgeable group.  Also, thanks to those of you I have met at the last two CLA shows and those who were gracious enough to send me some very helpfull pictures and offer advice over the phone.  I have a long way to go as a gun builder, but it would be much longer without the ALR.

50 cal. Rice B-profile swamped barrel, Chambers Late Ketland Lock, maple stock stained with homebrew aqua fortis and finished with Chambers Traditional Oil, the metal was finished with about everything the government hasn't taken off the market and salt water.

Slim & Trim...long, sleet lines...very nice!

I also like the backdrop for your photos...a subtle statement of times past.

Very nice...Where did you get the idea for the copper wear plate?

Tom,
Thanks for the kind words.  BTW, I took your advice and spent about 2 more hours getting rid of the flat in front of the trigger guard and rounding the stock underneath the lock panels.  Thanks!  I think it would have been an eye sore after she was finished if I had left it.

Mike,
The copper wear plate.........let me see how I can put that????  Damage Control.  Screwed up trying something a little unusual for an entry thimble.  I had a steel wear plate made and found out when I tried to finish it that it wouldn't take a finish like I wanted.  I would have rather had a more traditional entry thimble and will next time.  I just couldn't figure out how to put wood back on this one.

Ha!  I know better than that.  I've seen too many beautiful longbows you've made to believe your rifle will be anything short of fantastic.  I talked to Glenda at the HH shoot and asked about you.  You were on the range when I wasn't.  Hate we missed chatting.

Stunning!  That is one attractive rifle and you did a great job capturing the beauty and simplicity of a true TN rifle.  Well done.

Beautiful Greg!  Your finish is superb and the styling is yummy.  I think the copper plate is a fabulous bit of soul.

Greg,
I forgot to mention that your lock panels are as close to perfect as any I have seen.  If anyone wants to see how to shape the lock area correctly, they need look no further than your rifle.
