Engraved Bison Horn
« on: December 01, 2021, 07:16:40 PM »
I have been working on this two or three weeks.   The horn was provided to me complete and I was just asked to engrave it.  I had engraved another one for this client with my customary fraktur engraving.   The client wanted to fill this horn with engraving.  He initially asked for something inspired by cave or rock paintings.   I suggested something inspired by Micmac engraved horns.   That is what I ended up doing.   I was not trying to copy an existing horn, but be inspired by some of the original motifs.   I wish the quality of the engraving had been better, but my work did improve along the way.   I started out using an x-acto knife with a #12 blade, but I had I hard time working with it in the extreme curves of the horn.  I ended up doing most of the work with a scribe I made out of 1/8" music wire embedded in a large turned maple handle.  The engraved lines stood out pretty well on their own, but I enhanced them with titanium white oil paint that i just rubbed in.

That is very cool Mark.   The engraving looks super with the white fill.  Bison is not easy to work with, so that is doubly impressive.  God Bless,   Marc

It was inspired by a Micmac horn.  I won't claim that it is Micmac style.
