Barrel steel and lock bolts
« on: December 01, 2021, 07:56:47 PM »
I bought the barrel and stock Bobby Hoyt sold a few months ago.  Does anyone know what kind of steel he uses.  I nowmally use a chissel (with the hacksaw and file) in cutting the sight dovetails, but find this hard to do with some steels.  One other item.  I have not yet installed the front lock bolt.  The lock plate is inlet, and it appears the front bolt will go through the ramrod channel.  Tennessee mountain rifles often used one lock bolt.  Is that ok for a Chamber's small Siles on a 1780;s pistol?

Yes you can get away with one lock bolt on that particular lock.

I would check with Bobby on the steel he uses.

You also have the option of using a hook on the front.

Tight inletting of the lock plate and the bridle inside the lock will allow one bolt to be used on any
muzzleloader. In the absence of a milling machine I have used a square file, usually about 5/16 square
and grind off two sides to help with the width and the if one can be found,a 3 cornered(Triangular file
with sharp corners and grind one flat and the angles can be cut.

In my ignorance I think one lock bolt on a flint lock should be just fine but maybe not necessarily on a percussion lock.  I mean since the cock on a flint lock only strikes itself, little stress is placed on the bolt; unlike a percussion where the hammer strikes the barrel.
