Soddy-Daisy by Tyler Sydebotham of Golden Mean Flintlocks
« on: December 05, 2021, 04:13:51 AM »
Hey folks, I’m very proud to introduce my Soddy-Daisy school rifle from Tyler Sydebotham. She’s in 36 caliber, 42 inch straight barrel with round bottom rifling. Weighting just a hair over 7 pounds, the stock is walnut finished in aquafortis. The furniture is all iron, outside of the feather hole, and moon inlay, nose cap and front sight all of which are silver. Tyler did an absolutely outstanding job given this was his first rifle of the school. She shoots like a dream, just waiting on spring to properly adjust her sights. First time I took her out it was 34 degrees with a 35mph cross wind, so not ideal for a small caliber flinter. But I kept every shot in a palm sized grouping. I cannot wait to watch her age and really get to know and enjoy this beautiful southern lady.

She’s a beaut!  The aqua fortis gave a vet even tone to the walnut.  Good luck with her.

35 mph winds would certainly make it difficult to hold that little lady steady.  Very nice.

Just a little bit, I was happy with how I shot considering it was my first time out with it. And thank you kindly.

Very nice. Mine will be completed in the next month to 6 weeks. Like yours mine is also going to be in 36 caliber. I have no idea how the finished Soddy will look or how distressed it will look as I only gave my maker (Don Bruton) the caliber and length of pull. I leave the rest to his evil inspiration and maddening ways. When it arrives let's post us a "show me your Soddy" post. What loads have you tried with ball size patch material and lube?

I’d certainly love to be a part of a post like that. And as to load, a .350 ball, .018 pillow ticking patch with wonder lube from ox yoke and 35gr of 3f swiss. But I’ve not had time to truly work with the rifle yet.

Very much like the one that Len Meadows made for me in 1965.It was a 45 caliber x 13/16 barrel and I think it was 44" long and made by  Bill Large. It and my Whitworth long range rifle were my two favorites.

Nice looking rifle. They are a tricky style of rifle to get all the little quirks they have right. He did very well for a first time.  Nice gun.    .Oldtravler

About a year and a half ago Bob McBride posted pictures and did a video on the Soddy he got from Jack Duprey. That was the first I heard of these unique and seriously cool rifles. Now it seems like everyone (including myself) is either making one or having one made, some more accurately then others. This is neither good or bad as long as they are correct in every aspect. Just an observation.

Well, for me, tyler took a few tries to get it right working off pictures of Jacks guns from last year. I saw bobs and fell madly in love with the style. So i went for the work from tyler and I’m very confident in saying he nailed it. But I’m very interested in getting the gun under the experienced eyes and hands at the Knoxville show
