.66 round ball mold
« on: December 08, 2021, 12:39:22 AM »
Hello.

I'm interested in building a Light Dragoon Bess from sitting fox. The kit comes in .66 caliber and after doing some searching, I can't find any ball molds for that caliber. Wondering if anyone has some insight on where I might find a mold.

Thanks
Kelvin

kswan, I have an old Ideal now Lyman I think in 648 for my 66 rifle. There are other makers who will make what ever diameter mold you want one being the Jeff Tanner and another that the name evades me now. Post in the want adds here or shooting section and you will probably get a quick reply.

I had Tanner make me a .650" mold for my .66 cal Joseph Lang sporting rifle.  Throws perfectly round balls at exactly .650" dia.

Kevin, you would need a mould from .020" to about .030" smaller than the bore if you are patching in cloth.

Larry’s Callahan makes and sells any size round ball molds. They are old style “bag molds” but I find them as accurate and round as any others. Gotta wear gloves though!

There is a .660 Lyman mold on E-Bay right now.

For a smoothbore, a .660" RB mould would be for a 14 bore gun, so .690" to .693" smoothbores.
Lyman makes a .662" (16 bore) mould. Both Taylor and I have that mould.
