I was puzzled by the "Maplewood" feltpenon the stock. Sure looked like Ash to me in the forend, with nice straight grain.

Maplewood is part of my address and the handwriting by Allen Martin. Yep it's Ash and the grain runs through the wrist just like you want it too. Has areas of curl particularly in the butt section.

;) ;)... I would have used one of the more "Tennessee" looking trigger sets for a Soddy style build,... and remember, the shapeing of the butt and forestock are Everything in a true-style Soddy build,.... best wishes and regards,.. Cades Cove Fiddler,....

Thanks Dana I'm going to buy a set of triggers from Ross.

Stock shaping will be as close to a bench copy of my Soddy that Jack made as I can. It's very helpful having it on hand. I appreciate your advice.  :)

Barrel lugs have been installed inlet and drilled for pins. I really like using a blue sharpie for marking where things go because it stands out so well in both metal and wood. I used the same depth and placement of these lugs the same as on my model blueprint rifle. It's very interesting building this rifle to match Jack's because it gives me an opportunity to see inside his decision making process!

Bottom profile from entry to the nose roughed out with a hand saw ready to plane flat and then work on the ramrod groove.

;) ;) 8)... Great choice, Dan,... and they are completely hand made as were the original,... no cast parts,.. hand forged T/G and B/P to authentic style are also important,....regards,... CCF

Leveling the stock where the ramrod groove will go with a 200 year old block plane. Many thanks to Rich Pierce for sharpening and minor restoration. I bought two of them but this is my favorite!

Shown here are two sets of triggers. The one on the left is a #4 Davis double phase and on the right is my preferred for this build single phase I just got from Ross Dillion.

Lookin’ good, Dan. Kicking myself for not grabbing a set of those triggers from Ross. They look real nice. Maybe he’ll make more.

Ramrod groove cut and hole drilled to full depth. My drill bit that's worked so well on walnut and maple came out smoking on ash. Had to be very patient and resharpen. It turned out well just the same with no runout and I'm happy with it.

Trimmed a 1/4 inch slab off full length with a hand saw.

Next picture left to right. Jack's Soddy that I own and using as a reference. Next the 1/4 inch slab still full length with one possible color. Really like the curly figure. On far right is my project with a similar stain color but still looking. Notice the front end of the stock is cut to length. I like to wait until the barrel and ramrod channel are done first.

This is very enjoyable to watch and the original is cool as $#*!. Your saw work makes me think you could cut a ramrod for that rifle by hand.

Looking good, looking real good. When she is done we will have to find a way to get together for a Soddy shoot!

Got started back today after taking a month off. Got the lock and triggers tuned and all three tang screws mounted where I want them. Started trimming the buttstock more for the butt plate which will be next. Trigger pull looks like it's going to be 13 and 1/2 in and all measurements are going pretty well although the stock still looks big.

Picture today shown side by side with my Jack Duprey Soddy gun.
