Hand forged back strap made from 1/8 stock and installed with one screw so far. I made one earlier from 16 ga steel but I can't bring myself to use it. Soddy butt plates should not be flat so this one will be thicker in the middle and thinner on the edge when done.

She's looking mighty fine.  Thanks for sharing the progress pictures.  Love seeing the progress.  ALways good to see another Soddy.  Maybe Mr. Kibler will do a Soddy instead of that dang Hawken.

Hand forged toe plate to get the thickness and width I was after. Rates high on the nifty scale in my mind.

Hi Daniel, take care if using a wood screw for the bottom of your butt plate that it dosnt intersect with your toe plate screw, great job your doing ,take care Steven.

I am not sure that I understand the "back strap". Are you not going to use a complete buttplate?

The back strap will be combined with the heel for a complete butt plate assembly. It's a multi step process.

When riveting that toe plate, do you have to be concerned about breaking the wood?  That’s one thing I’ve never tried to do.  Do you inlet the toe plate after buttplate, drill the hole and then rivet with parts off the stock?

I assemble in place. I do this while the stock is still at full width and at its strongest. My butt plate is really a three piece assembly with back strap heal and toeplate riveted together. I use great care when riveting and support everything so that the energy from the hammer only goes directly where I want it to.

I'm not concerned about breaking the wood at all using this method.

Here's a picture of a copper rivet I'm making part way through the tap tap tapity tap and file process. Why would anyone build a copper rivet from scratch when they can buy them so cheaply? I believe that the old dead guys (ODGs) did the same thing 200 years ago, they had a need for one and didn't have any on hand so they made them.

I use #12 copper wire to make mine.

Butt stock is starting to take on that Soddy look I'm after. Still in the rough but but close enough to build the rest of the heel and back strap assembly in place.

Here's a couple pictures of the heel and also of the inlet. That's a snap fit I'm building in place and will not remove it once it's set and finished as part of my three piece butt plate assembly including back strap heel and toe plate.

Butt assembly installed will leave some of the forge marks on purpose. Gun fits me perfectly and 7.5 pounds currently with a lot of wood yet to whittle off.

Could you elaborate on the process that you used to fabricate the "heal" portion of your buttplate? Did you use a swage? The piece is obviously tapered from top to bottom, is it also tapered from side to side?
 This is quite interesting.

Yes it's tapered both top to bottom and front to back. No swage just heat hammer anvil and antique punch. Started with a paper pattern cut to fit. Then did the top radius which made the bottom edges flat and touching. Next opened up the sides from the bottom.

To put in place I had to drop in from the top and slide forward about 1/4 inch. Mounted permanently in place with nails and a hand made copper rivet. Most old rifles use screws for the heel but these guns are so narrow that it leaves a poor fitting oblong screw head. Some makers today like Chuck Edwards and Hershel House use some nailed on hardware.

I'll post a picture of the punch in a bit.

Hand forged side plate made and positioned on the gun. Ready to locate and layout the side panels now.
