She's coming along real nice.  I like the lines so far.

Looking great, Dan!  Very inspiring, step-by-step birth of a Soddy!  Excellent in every way!

Thank you for the phone call this weekend Don! Your friendship and kind mentoring mean a great deal to me. I hope to see more Soddy guns from your camp!  :)

Speaking of lines the lock panels on a Soddy Daisy are a bit different.

That's one of the characteristics of a Soddy I find hard to believe started by one builder doing a fish belly lock panel, all of the customers liked it so much that the other builders started doing it too.

Lock panels, butt plate, and cheek piece are all distinguishing characteristics of the Soddy Daisy guns. There are other subtle differences but these are the main ones if you want one to look like a Soddy.

It stands out like a goose egg in a bucket of coal IMHO.My taste in muzzleloaders are rifles like these and the top of the line Eastern target rifles like those made by Whitmore and others when it comes to American rifles.

Always great to talk to you, too, Daniel!  We are no doubt, Soddy Brothers, of the most dedicated type.  I'm almost getting where I dream about them!  LOL!

Your "Soddy build post" is extremely interesting and educational, to say the least!  The butt plate, so far, is my biggest issue after seeing several originals that show some variation.  I will keep working on that.  I think you have nailed it with yours!  Thank you!

;) ;).. Some old Soddy match rifles had this unique lock area, some did not,.... it IS an interesting feature,... This is a fine match rifle by John W. Clements of Soddy Tennessee circa 1880  ,... well cared for and still in shooting shape,... she will be at the Knoxville show,... regards,.. Cades Cove Fiddler,...

The goal here is to create a believable hand forged mountain rifle. First picture is of the side plate and front half of the trigger guard. What you see is pretty much what you get for finish with forging marks all part of the deal.

Second picture is showing the front half of the trigger guard fitted up against the triggers. Back half of the trigger guard will be built in place as the gun finishes up. That way the parts and rifle will fit since they are done at the same time. There's an endless array of possibilities for how the old dead guys (ODG's) did this 200 years ago but this is the way I'm doing it. I've been using a similar theme throughout the build.

She's looking totally good, Dan!  Love that metal finish!

What is it about these Soddy rifles?

To me their just a unique style of hunting rifle. Without all the fancy stuff you see on the more elegant guns.
A gun that's meant to be used. Instead of on the wall or stuck in a safe.
But that's just my opinion. But then I'm not a collector. But to the people who do. We owe all of this to them..

Getting a feel for how the trigger guard is going to look. I'm leaving in the morning for a wedding so I won't get much done the rest of this week.

I can build the back half of the trigger guard and install it when I get back.

The Soddy Daisy is such an elegant design!  Who and what inspired them?

I really like that diamond section of the butt, and just the overall look.  Nifty, as one respondent on this forum might say.

Dan, thanks for all the work you're putting into keeping every one up to date on the build. I'm really learning quite a bit following your build.

Trigger guard is done and ready for final installation. It took me a while but I'm happy with how this one turned out.

The guard is usually the last thing to make and put on.  It's like a breath of life into the project and highlights and accents everything done, thus far.

Looking really great, Dan!  Thank you for sharing this very special build.

Very nice work. I love it.

Dupreys soddy makes me think of a witch's broom, or maybe a Longrifle that would belong to a witch. I don't know why, but that's the magical quality that type of rifle has in my mind.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and encouragement! Here's a picture of my Jack Duprey rifle and Joe Mills bag that I'm using for inspiration for this build.

No doubt about the magic!
