Dickert Pipes and Thimbles
« on: December 24, 2021, 06:37:15 PM »
Does anyone have any close-ups of Jacob Dickert ramrod Pipes and Thimble. Looking for some clear examples and seem to be hard to come by. Doesn't matter if thy are early or late Dickert's. I read a post here, but can't find it now, whee someone commented that the front pipes on most Dickert builds are incorrect. Since I am making my own, I'd prefer to do them in the correct manner.

Here's a couple more pictures from the rifle in the library that Rich linked.
This entry pipe is original to the rifle, but has had a bit of restoration.
On the top pic, notice the two pins holding the pipe in place.
It's a late rifle, likely made about 1790-1800ish.

@JTR
That's excellent. The statement made by the one poster said that on most rifles made today, the front pipe is wrong. I don't remember reading what exactly was wrong about them, and that too is something I am trying to clarify. If anyone remembers the post, or has an opinion on that detail, by all means I'm all ears.

I also pilfered these images from the Rock Island Auction video (another late Dickert):

On some early rifles the front thimble is larger. The thing folks don’t like to eee in a build is the ramrod not snugged up to the nosecap. A gap between the ramrod and nosecap is deemed unsuitable.

The front one, closest to the muzzle? As far as I know they look like the ones shown in the auction pics. Held in place with two pins.
Rich is right if you have a flared out end on the RR, the front thimble could be a bit larger diameter.

That too I was aware of. I thought perhaps it was something along those lines. How close should the ramrod fit on the nose cap.? Actually touching, or with a bit of friction?

I’d not want tension on the front thimble. Just touching to a 1/16” gap seems fine to me.

If you want to build an accurate Dickert, pay attention to the shape of the triggers as well.
