Southern Mt for my Son.
« on: December 26, 2021, 07:58:01 PM »
My son didn't get to shoot this yesterday for Christmas, but I got it done.  He is a Marine and won't be home for good until August, so it will be waitingfor him.  I've had this wood and barrel a LONG time.  This is the first gun I've built in about 8 years.  I'm VERY rusty and can't see like I used to.  Took me forever, and it's not without mistakes.  I think it looks ok, what does everyone think?
It's a swamped. 36 Getz 43" long.  Jim Kibler lock and tang.  Ross Dillion triggers.  Side plate, toe plate, thimbles, pewter nose cap, sites, made by me.  But Plate from MBS along with a heavily modified TG.  Iron Nitrate made by me with 19th century nails diluted in nitric and homemade stain.

Thanks for looking!

There a a whole lot of things to compliment here! What catches my eye first is your stain color! It’s pleasant while showing off the grain equally with the curl figure. Getting the color right is tough!

Is that an Ash stock? Mighty fine piece of work. If that the kind of rifle you build you when your rusty, you gonna make a fine looing rifle when you get all oiled up. ;D Thank your son for his service and may God keep him safe.

Thank you for all the compliments.  I could pick this gun apart but I'm over it.  Yes the wood is curly Ash.  Color was tricky....straight nitric acid just didn't do it on this Ash,, it needed the red under tones from the rusty nails to set it off..  it's a real shame that some day all the Ash trees will be dead..  All mine are dead on the property..  Ross your triggers make the gun, thanks for that.  I have made several sets in years past but Ross had them available and they are FIRST CLASS!  I suck at taking pictures and only have my phone to take them, they also could be better.   That tang was a real pain to inlet, I broke the first one Jim sent me!  Just too forceful with inleting... The keys were a pita also, I forgot how to do them but the last two were really easy after I made more tools to do them.. I did shoot it in the white, worked up a load and sight it in.  I will let him know the ALR people are also thankful for his service.

I like to antique them but couldn't bring myself to beat up the stock so I just over browned, carded, and rubbed the corners off to show a little aging...

Nice.  I was going to have one done for my son when he graduated from 4 years USMC. But I was late.
I did use this on the cheekpiece.
Its part of a fine silver coin.

God bless your son for his determination, bravery and patriotism.

You definitely did justice to a very nice piece of curly ash.
That is a fine looking rifle that I’m sure your son will be thrilled with it, as well he should be.

Wishing him all the best and thanks for his service.

Very nice color, on a wonderful slab of ash. You can celebrate Christmas again when you present it to him. Sure he is as proud of you as you are of him.

I like it a lot, especially the long tang and the wood.  Great work.
