Two Sterling Silver Shot/Gil Cups and a Jig
« on: December 27, 2021, 06:16:05 PM »
Now that Christmas has passed here are a couple of Sterling Silver Gil/Shot cups I finished up recently. One with and one without a handle.

I engraved the first one by opening and tightening my vice and decided there had to be a better way to using a couple of cheap flanged bearings and an edge clamp I made this jig to hold the cups while engraving.I also added a nylon thumb screw to act as an adjustable brake. It greatly sped up the engraving time.

Mitch,

These little cups are fantastic !!!  What gauge material did you use ?  And what are the dimensions of the cups, if I may ask?

Also....I disagree, respectfully, with Tim.....In my case it isn't "necessity" that is the mother of invention, it's laziness..... ;)

Again, beautiful job on these cups both in the fabrication and engraving !

Beautiful work on the sterling cups, and a crafty setup for engraving 'em.  Always love to see your latest projects, Mitch.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Hi Dave

Here's a pic with a rule in it for scale.I made the body and bottom out of 24 gauge.I might be able to do it in 26 in this size and I may try that at some point but the 24 worked nicely.

Mitch,

Thanks for the additional photo.  I am assuming that you assembled these gill cups out of sheet and wire.  Or did you spin them out of sheet on a mandrel ?

Hi Dave
Yes they are made from sheet and wire. The half round wire is from ingots cast in the shop and rolled and drawn. The double bead on the bottom was purchased as I haven't found a draw plate for that profile.

If you ever get set up to make a run of these cups please put me on the list. Seriously cool.

Coincidentally, I found this 1890s stamped (UK weights and measures certified measures each year) gill pewter cup before Christmas.  Had never heard of a gill before that.

Great picture, Ed. Reminds me, there's a barely cracked bottle of single malt in the cupboard & I just became thirsty.

I love that "chevrons chasing chevrons" border you do.  Very crisp work.
