Getz 54 & 62 Barrel Load Recommendations/Suggestions?
« on: December 29, 2021, 05:04:04 AM »
I've a couple of rifles being built, using Getz barrels in 54 (42") and 62 (31") and I'd welcome recommendations/suggestions as to ball diameter & patch suggestions, as well as powder charge considerations.

Thanks!

The fun part is in working up the best loads. Start with one grain of powder per caliber and shoot 5 shot groups, increase by 5 grains and shoot 5 shot groups, etc. 20/1000 washed denim with bear oil, deer tallow, tracks mink oil, Hoppes #9 Black Powder patch lube or what ever else ( not bore Butter) for patch lube. Only change one variable at a time. Shoot at 50 yds. rest. Aim small-miss small.  :) Save your targets and record your results.

My .54 Getz shoots well with a .530 ball, 0.020 patch, and 80 grains of FFG. If I had a .535 ball mold I’d use that and start with a 0.018” patch.

I have had lots of trouble working up a good load.  My patches kept blowing out.

I finally took the advice of this board, after I found a good fabric store, and got white cotton denim.  It is fairly thick, but I have not measured it.

Today I shot for the first time in too long for many reasons, and I used 80 grains FFg, .530 ball, and the cotton denim.  The groupings were good (for me) and the patches could have been used again, so no more blown patches.

The only problem is I bought the material about 8 months ago, so now I have to take a sample back to the store and try to find the right bolt of cloth, and buy as much as I can.

The barrel was a Rice .540, not a Getz, but I am not sure that matters much.

Bottom line, I used a thick patch and a .530 ball and 80 grains and it grouped nice at 50 yards.

100 yards won't be as tight, but that will be my fault, not the rifle's.

Martin & Nailcreek, I suggest with the .010" undersized ball, that 10 ounce denim be used. That patch material works well in every one of my guns
even the .36 which has only .008" rifling depth & I used a .010" undersized ball in it. In the .36 and .50 (.495"ball) the 10 ounce denim
gives the best accuracy.
Always buying 10(or 8 ounce 100% Cotton denim, becomes easier than having to run through ream after ream of cloth with calipers trying to find what
you used last year, again.
The 8 ounce denim will usually measure .018" to .019" thick & some guys like that "weight".
