Isaac Haines 38" bbl?

Looked at many photos  of Haines' LRs and found only one w/ that short a bbl, but nearly all the parts sets on the market have that length of bbl. If I remember correctly, Don Getz brought out a Haines parts set many years ago  but their stock profiler would only handle a precarve  for a 38" bbl and all the other suppliers followed suit. Seeing I like at a minimum a 42" bbl. the 38" bbl of most parts sets makes the assembled  Haines  look like a carbine. ....Fred

Fred, it sure is a seller. Don Getz was a smart cookie. He had to name the kit something or other and calling it an Isaac Haines sure worked.

Probably but I used one of those Dunlap/Getz kits to build an early Dickert rifle. I absolutely loved the way it handled with the Rice C profile 38" 54 caliber barrel. I used it for my hunting rifle and could not have asked for a better rifle to hunt with in our neck of the woods. I doubt Dickert ever built one with that short of a barrel but I suspect there were many that were cut off at muzzle and breech then "freshed" out due to wear.

In RCA #1, there is a gun attributed to Isac Haines, with a .60 cal 38 inch barrel.
It is a Smoothbore.
Surely if Don Getz called it an Isac Haines kit,he would have been justified in doing so.

I believe Dunlap sells a Haines kit with a 42or 44 barrel.

Taylor has built a couple I. Haines rifles, I think with 42" bls.

That 38 inch barrel makes it a lot easier when you travel from one hunting spot to another and have passengers along. The type of terrain and habitat hunted might dictate a shorter barrel also.

Chambers does have the Early Lancaster kit with a 44 inch barrel I think that might be made up as an I. Haines .

Around 15 years ago I bought an Isaac Haines parts set from TOTW that used a Colerain 42" barrel.  This past year I built another  rifle with the 38" Colerain barrel.  I much prefer the handling and balance of the 38" barrel over the 42" one. Could also have something to do with the fact I'm 5" 8" tall.

I too think Dunlap sells a kit with a 42" barrel  I have one from them in 38" I assembled in 1994 and it is still killing deer.  And I use it alot.  Good kit, good folks.

Oh, the balance & handling of a Haines in. 38” B50 or C54 is awesome
I’ve built 16 in a B40 or B50, and 32 in C54 in 38”. I have hunted with a
Haines  .54 in 38” for 17 years. For me, most comfortable rifle I’ve ever
shot. The Haines & German Jaeger are my favorites 👍

Used to be able to buy them from Dunlap, TOW, or Tip Curtis in 38” length.
The 42” length they called a Lancaster, but was basically the same except
it used the large Bivins buttplate & the large Bivins triggerguard. Ive built 17
of the 42” barrels in .54 & a few in .58 for elk hunters.  It makes a nice rifle
just a tad heavier, usually 9 to 9.5#. I built one for a elk hunter in .58 can &
his hunting buddies liked it so well I got 3 more orders from them.

That one also has imported furnishings, very much unlike any of the kits. I ain't knocking the kits as I'm slowly building one now, just with a different butt plate.

I have 2 rifles with 38 in. barrels from rice, the way they carry around in the thick stuff in the Pa woods makes a light ,fast handling rifle.

I’ve got a Chambers Haines rifle with a 38” barrel in 54cal.  Well balanced and easy to aim rifle.  Maybe from a historical perspective it should have a longer barrel, but when I’m hunting that never seems to bother me.

To me the Haines style with a 38 inch barrel is perfect. I have a 42 inch Virginia rifle and I never use it because it's just too long for my tastes. I'm 5' 11" in height and the 38 inch barrel is at a perfect height to load.

My squirrel LR has a straight 7/8" X  42" bbl in ,45 cal. and is extremely accurate  enabling mostly all head shots. It's weight is somewhere close to 9lbs and handles fine all day. The bbl is a shallow rifled Douglas {.006 deep}  and I sometimes wonder why many bbls on the market today have .016 deep rifling  which is nearly impossible to seal even when  using   a harder to load thick patch. If one does the math for a .016 deep   grooved bbl using a moderately thick patch and a suitably sized ball, the bore doesn't come close to being sealed. I guess I just like longer bbls and my Bucks County LRs all have  46" B weight  bbls...afterall, they are called "longrifles".

Seeing swamped bbls are used for many LRs , bbl weight and balance  shouldn't be a problem....Fred

At 5’10” I find 44” very easy to load.
