The parts for this come from the first pistol I ever built. I got real tired of looking at it, so a couple months ago I tore it down and recently started this. Added keys and did away with the sideplate also am adding sights.

Will shape the grip to my liking as I go and likely loose alot of the "umbrella handle". Probably add a nosecap and an inlay or three, feeling nautical. Nice to fix ones' mistakes, at least some of them

Ed Rayl barrel, "Naval Brass", 70% copper, 30% zink. I believe this is correct, ask Mr. Rayl he will know for sure.

Getting further along, shaping stock and moldings, inlet key escutcheons and trimmed keys. Will change nose a bit and need to give my hand a bit more pinkey room. Happy so far. Thanks for comments.

The ramrod is not for this pistol, it was just handy.

That looks great!!!
I like it without a nose cap (unless it would be ebony or a Rosewood or something similar)... I think a brass nose cap would look funny, with that forward barrel key close to the muzzle.

Oh yeah - looking great, Ed. I was wondering if the sweep to the front at the bottom of the grip was too much? Of course, it's all how it feels to you.
My mitt might be too big for that grip, I guess, it what I was thinking.

Thanks guys, it's coming along pretty well. Daryl, the last shaping I do is the grip, I keep handling and shaping till it feels right. Made more pinky room today, funny that when I compare guns they are remarkably similar, reaching some consistency. This piece of wood has really great grain flow and curl, I'm hesitant to do any more without letting it simmer in my head awhile. Shaped the nose, installed the front sight and finished the ramrod today, waiting on a triggerguard to compare with the ones I have and then decide. Want to try it out soon and do some finish samples. Thanks for looking, more pics to follow,

Nose shaped, front and rear sights, captured keys, following grain in grip. Still a bit more shaping after the guard goes in.

Really nice work, Ed. Making a real treasure there.
I almost always have a pistol or three that I work on when I get tired of the bigger stuff. And you have given me plenty of ideas and inspirations. I particularly like the color that you used, it goes great with the brass furniture and bronze barrel.
I have one barrel (and BA lock) that is nicely browned, and have started a Deringer-type stock for it. First time with the BA locks, and noticed that usually a silver inlay is made by the nipple to protect the wood. Glad I keep silver flat stuff in stock.

Thanks Craig, the color is Kibler tannic acid followed by iron nitrate, I don't use a stain, just adjust the previous and do lots of samples. The wood usually has its way and I'm not complaining. After heating I wet sand with mineral spirits till I'm close to what I like, then I oil and sand gently with 400 grit a couple times and then use a varnish oil to get a desired gloss and a harder finish. I decided to go with a plainer look although I may checker this after the finish has time to cure, it feels so good in the hand and helps with my grip. Never built a back action or a derringer, where does one find parts or do you make them yourself? Here are some bitter pics, I'm pretty pleased.

That's cool! Lotsa brass barreled English pistols in the book from Track- with barrel wall dimensions.
I was shocked by some wall thicknesses in the waist of the swamped barrels.

Daryl, when I decided that I did not want to cut dovetails into this barrel instead filed flats fore and aft that would allow the keys to sit on the median line of the gun. The notches go to zero on the mid end and have a tiny dovetail on the fat end. I wanted the keys to be on the same plane but did not want to intrude on the barrel. Worked out fine I believe. Soldered the lugs and they are there to stay. Conversations with you and Taylor had some input on the rear sight position and I think it's winner. A little chilly to shoot today but as soon as I get the chance...Bang!

Yeah - that is nice. The rear sight location is perfect. Absolutely no effect on the gun's integrity. Well done, Ed.
You did a really nice job on this pistol.
Buck and ball were especially pleasing at 12 yards, with my .54 rifled pistol.
