Good Source for Walnut Stock Blank ?
« on: January 08, 2022, 07:17:43 AM »
I realized the other day that I had never built a fowler....and I would like to.  I have a barrel coming and I have a lock.  However, conspicuous by its absence in my shop is a suitable piece of stock wood.  Do any of you have a suggestion for a supplier of a good walnut blank ?

Thanks

I've bought good walnut from Ron Long and Allen Martin, fast & easy every time.

The gold USMC wings you made for Lee have been logging a lot of hours, they are in NC now.

Daniel, Carl,

Thank you for the recommendations....and, Carl, glad the wings are getting to fly !!!  I've made several Aviator wings and other warfare specialty insignia and rank insignia for all service branches this last few months.  I always say a little prayer when I send any of the insignia on their way that the recipient's guardian angels keep them safe... ;)

I have about 20 choice blanks set aside, unless you want something generic & plain.
I don't have anything plain.

PM  & Tell me what you  want, what you really really want.  ;D  I can shoot you a

Hi David,
I don't know what kind of fowler you intend but if English, I really recommend English walnut (Juglans regia) not black walnut. It is also called Circassian, Armenian, French, European, and Turkish walnut. The density is usually greater and the color much more attractive.  Ron Scott and Keith Lisle are good sources for English walnut.

X2 on checking with Keith.  I was down a couple of months back and he has some beautiful walnut blanks.

I get my walnut blanks from Ron Scott.  They are English walnut, grown in Armenia.  Lots of figure, and VERY hard and dense.  Keep your chisels sharp!

Ron is on the forum here, and often has stocks listed in the "For Sale" section.

When mass produced muzzle loaders started coming into use the wood,at least to me,looked like some sort of pine.
Does anyone remember these or know what they really were. The very best I ever saw was a TC owned by my father in Law and it was walnut of a quality and color usually seen on high end English double rifles.Superb wood with non traditional parts and my father in law, being the unknowing man he was, sold his Tom Dawson Hawken that was correct in all aspects and kept the TC because of the fancy wood.

My good wife, once warned me, that my Guardian Angel was being taxed very highly and some day might quit that job.  I took what she
said to heart and sold the bike and bought a boat. Probably the best life saving thing I've ever done. It also gave my Angel a break.

Thank you all for the help!  I have sent off a couple of PMs in search of wood.

Smart Dog....I don't have anything specific in mind for the fowler (mostly because I don't know my elbow from a hot rock about fowlers), but I do have a Colerain 16 gage Griffin barrel on the way and I was going to contact you about some recommendations / guidance (read that "adult supervision") on this project....if you're willing.

Dan.....I love the "government paid vacation" description.  And I bet your guardian angel worked harder than mine.  We will need to swap "sea stories' at some point about our respective times working at lower than minimum wage for Uncle Sam... :)

Daryl...I am actually on my fourth guardian angel.  Two previous ones quit and another is in a rehab facility for angels that are too conscientious about their job and suffer from mental problems.  I think the one I have now is betting I won't live that much longer so I won't be a problem soon.... :)  And your wife was correct....they don't call them "donor cycles" for nothing.  The boat is probably a better idea....However, in my case, the "boats" were made of steel, floating in salt water, internally generating enough 440 VAC electrical power to run a small city, and all the spare spaces were jammed full of high explosives and flammable liquids.  What could possibly go wrong   :o

My apologies gentlemen, I wrote "Ron Long" when I was thinking Ron Scott. Ron sent me some fine English walnut. Each time I have dealt with Ron I feel like I have gotten more than I bargained for.

Allot of them were made of beech.  Beech is fairly hard & grows in huge trees, thus it fit the bill for allot of the mass produced rifles.

Hi Dave,
Of course I will be happy to help.  The first thing I can do for you is urge you to look at the tutorials I posted "Understanding British Fowlers" and "Building an Historically Correct Mid-18th Century English Fowler".  They contain a lot of information specific to British fowlers but also a lot of generic information about fowlers.
