Banded Horn With Wear & Repair
« on: January 12, 2022, 10:35:17 PM »
The story; This horn may have started it's life as a 4 or 5 banded horn. Over time one band wore through and fell off, the ghost band and pin holes can be seen. The other two are worn but still there, the butt shows ware as well, it's finial was broken or chewed of and replaced with a nail. Somewhere along the way the original antler tip and possibly a band or two, was broken/split, chewed of by a Dog, Chipmunk, Rat, mouse, etc... and was replaced by a piece of horn that was shaped with a knife.
The horn: It is about 13 1/2" around the outside curve, The Walnut butt is 2 1/2" wide and hollowed out about 3/4s its length. The added tip is held by 3 wooden pegs.

Hey Tim,

Good looking, believable horn.  Great back-story.  I like it.

For sure. Worn down and missing bands are a very nice touch.

Nice horn!  I like the story and believable wear and tear on the horn.  Nice work as always.

Yeah, that's cool.  Love the missing band.  I like the strap button on the base plug too.  Well done brother!

As I have all my rifles made to look like a well cared for but well used rifle of the Appalachian Mountain area (NW North Carolina) with the patina to match this is the kind of horn I strive to have with each of my rifles.
