You should go to Dixon’s and look at what’s hanging from the ceiling there.

I plan to when they reopen after Jan 21. It was Mr Dixon sr who always told me he favored the .45 round ball, and he was known for the Schimmel. So with his passing I was inspired to try to build a Dixon inspired Schimmel.  38–42-inch swamped barrel, good wood (maple w curl) small siler lock brass trigger guard & pipes (simple or no but plate).  But for now, looking for examples.  Weather permitting the 18th century gun builder's fair for supplies.

You can get lots of pictures on this site. Go to the upper right hand corner and search for schimmel instead of shimmel.

I find most of the pictures are gone from old threads.

My Berks Co. schimmel made by Allen Martin. .50 cal Getz barrel, stocked in Red maple:

My Lehigh schimmel made by Jack Duprey. .54 smooth round barrel made by Ken Netting, stocked in cherry:

I also have a copy of a treatise written by Chuck Dixon about his thoughts on schimmels. PM me if you are interested and I will send you a copy.

That Jack Duprey gun turns my crank, but then, so does the Berks county rifle.

recurve, I believe you and I met briefly at a local gunclub by chance a few years ago when I was shooting my then new-to-me Bucks fowler.

I'll try to get some pics, but I have a little 36 cal Berks fowler made by Allen Martin that is a little sweetheart of a rifle and a dandy squirrel whomper. If you wanted to check it out in person, I'm sure we can figure something out.

I'll actually be toting it up to the Lewisburg Fair to drop it with Allen to look at the frizzen spring. If you're up there, I'm sure we can make some arrangements for you to handle it then, too.

Yep...that was me! I've taken a bit of game with that fowler since then!

I do need to shoot that little 36 schimmel some, but I may not get to before I take it up to Lewisburg. Don't worry, it'll come back home....

If you're going to be in Lewisburg for the show on Friday, though, we can figure out a way for you to get hands on that schimmel if ya like.

The Lehigh schimmel made by Jack Duprey is my favorite. I love the less pronounced check rest and how the carving is not very deep and a Very tasteful amount of carving. I also love the architecture of the stock And the color of the wood.

Nifty!

Those are all lovely guns. I have a question would carving on a so-called barn gun be appropriate? After all I think a man would rather pay for a butt-plate than some carving. Just a thought.

Took some pictures of my Berks schimmel made by Allen Martin…I put a $5 bill by it in one shot to show just how skinny that rifle is!

(Ignore the dog hair.....yellow lab in the house, and you know labs....they shed twice a year- 6 months in the spring and 6 months in the fall!)

Here's mine.  54 smoothrifle.  Bought her last year through Allen Martin but can't recall the builder's name.

Thank you! It was built for another customer, and I'm (I think?) the third owner.

When it became available, Allen knew it was something similar to what I'd expressed interest in. I wandered too close to his stand at Dixon's and.....well....yeah. The rest, as they say, is history.

The folks who built the guns shown is this thread fully under the concept of architecture.  Clean, clean lines, with no bling to distract.

I don't want to derail the thread, but... Quick question...

My understanding is that barn guns were generally low-cost, no frills guns for farmers or folks who needed something to meet militia membership requirements...

Would they typically be stocked in nice maple? Or would a less expensive wood be used? If so, what wood would that be, generally? Walnut perhaps?
