Tool List needed
« on: October 07, 2009, 02:26:21 AM »
What are the basic tools needed for beginners? Aside from a good vise etc, what are the first tools I should purchase for stock work and what type files for the metal work and metal inlay/engraving?

I have a lot of tools for hammer and dolly type metal work but new to the wood scraping, inlays, metal engraving stuf.

MOST deffinitley will be buying books. Any others you would reccomend? I have been collecting pics from the web of rifles to look at as well. I have some stuff on the way from R.E. Davis.

I will start out with a simpler rifle such as a North Carolina/Tennessee mountain type first.

Good man. That is a fine choice. You just can't beat a Tenn. hog rifle.

I bought two books to start out.  "The Gunsmith of Grenville County" & "Recreating the American Longrifle".  Spend a couple of weeks reading and studying them.  Buy tools as you need them.  Hard to know what tools you will find most valuable, but I'd go ahead and get a good 1/8" and 1/4" wood chisel and a #49 & #50 nicholsen cabinet makers rasps.  Don't be shocked, but those four tools will set you back a few pennys.  They were the workhorses of the stock work for me.

Panther Creek,
Take a look at this link which is accessed either directly at:
http://americanlongrifles.org/WorkShop_frame.htm (note the Tool List there)

Or you can go to the ALR welcome page www.AmericanLongRifles.com then click on the "Gun Building" tab. There is some good info there.
