Marshall Rifle, sort of…..
« on: January 31, 2022, 06:35:17 AM »
Hi everyone…, I haven’t posted anything here in forever, so thought I’d try getting back into the swing of things.  This rifle is kind of a combination of the Marshall rifle, RCA 119, and a wrist inlay that plays off the French influenced butt piece.

The rifle is stocked in maple, and has a 38” Rice barrel in .50 cal.  The stock was stained with iron nitrate, and finished with tung oil.  The lock is a Chambers, and the triggers are from Davis.  The guard is a commercial Marshall style.  The butt piece was cut to the pattern from a commercial, Marshall style butt piece.  I made the side plate, pipes, muzzlecap, and cast the wrist inlay from a pattern I made.

The carving was patterned after the Marshall Rifle, and the engraving on the butt piece and guard is patterned off of RCA 119.

If anyone has any questions, I’d happy to try to answer them.  Best,

Ed

Wow that’s nice.
I love the small details and the added changes from the Marshall rifle.

I like it. Mostly I like to see free thinking in the build. It comes together rather well. The side plate reminds me of a Klette side plate that I very much like.

Very nice.  Engraving is outstanding.  Looks like it would be a real nice handling rifle for hunting.  Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,

Nice gun, Ed!!  It is great to see your crisp clean work and I really like the way you recreate classic styles but with nice twists and changes.

Wildly Cool rifle! Your composition is superb, I love how effortless the flow is down the entire length of the gun, no speed bumps or hard stops. You said you used tung oil, what brand did you use and how does it differ in appearance than if you had used a polymerized BLO like tried and true or Danish oil? Thank you.

Hi Ed, It's ben a while, nice to see your work again. I've been looking at my Moravian books again for inspiration. I read an article some years ago speculating about RCA 119 being made by Albrecht for the Great Shawanoe chief. I think it also adds interest to your build.

Really nice inspirational work Ed.  I have a similar build in my head:  started with a .58 cal barrel from Barbie, same lock and triggers, hardware from Mike Brooks, now all I need is the energy to dive in.  I bought both Moravian books and the new CD from KRA, so I've got lots to study and inspire.  This rifle you've presented is right up my alley... Thanks for posting it.
