February Match (posted for Snrub47)
« on: February 02, 2022, 03:52:29 AM »
Same Rules as January, same target:

https://www.nmlra.org/downloads

the bottom target, their November2020 target and our Feb. 2022.
5 shots per target only, offhand/standing/kneeling/sitting/prone - no bench-rests(I guess).
Submit as many as you want, only the best will count.
The whole idea is to get out and SHOOT!

I believe it says same as last month rules. If so it is at 25 yards.

Yes, 25yds.

Could also be a great 50 yard target from a rest. Perhaps in a different month?

Well somebody has to be first. The reason I am posting this target (a 48 1X ain't got a chance) is the rifle I shot this from is my brand new Don Bruton Soddy-Daisy (see my post under Contemporary Longrifle collecting). It has less than 50 shots through it and I am obviously still doing load, powder and ball size development. If you will note at 3 o'clock between the 10 and 9 ring a "perfect" 3 shot cloverleaf (and the X ring shot ain't bad either). It has been a very long time since I have ever been able to do that (got real, real lucky). 36 caliber with a .350 ball, .020 "spit patch", 40 grains of Goex 3F from a sitting position at 25 yards.

It is currently 17° F with a wind chill of 4° with several inches of fresh powder... Actual depth would be a guess because it keeps rearranging itself... Depending on where you measure it's either a dusting or 2 feet.

I keep saying I will participate in one of these and it never works out. However it is supposed to be 51 on Tuesday, and 54 on Wednesday... So we'll see if I can make time. Less wind predicted for Wednesday, so that may be my day.

Nice shooting MuskratMike!

Well done, Mike.  We've had a few days of cold, not supposed to warm for 4 days or so, so I expect we'll get out if it isn't snowing or perhaps raining too hard.

What does "post to social media" mean?  I really don't want to be posting stuff to social media platforms (such as Facebook, etc.).  I CAN provide a link to the target, but not on social media.

Doubleset: just send a picture of your target to this post we can see it but no one else.

Look at the January match thread for examples. Just post a photo here.  When you reply , you'll see an " add image" ...click on that, and then just drag your photo over. It's so simple even I can do it  :)

Thanks.  Of course this forum is in itself a "social medium", but not one I'm reticent in posting to.  I just make some effort to keep various aspects of my life compartmentalized, although I think that may be falling out of favor in the general population.  :)

Taylor and I got out - so far this month, he beat me.
I used my .75 Diotper computer glasses for this shooting.  It sure was nice seeing the front sight, for a change.
4 out of 5 in .964".

Used my "go to" rifle this afternoon with my .60 cal Buckeye barrel.  Daryl and I decided to shoot from a sitting position today as the shooting position at our range is glare ice, and it paid off.  My first target today was my best!

Sure is nice to have above freezing temperature to shoot in, for a change.

I spotted every shot Taylor made (we do that for each other) and I think his target is actually a 3X. There were what looked like 2 1/2 balls inside, then his
5th shot punched the centre/top out of the X ring.
Of course, Snrub47 has the final say.

WE got out again. Didn't improve my score - used the .50 Beck this time.
1st shot was the 9 at 4 o'clock, then the 10 at 4 o'clock, then the x's, last shot was 10 at 12 o'clock.
I also used my .75 Diopter glasses.

Today, I went from my .60 cal Virginia to my Thomas Allison .25 cal!  From a 305 gr. ball to one weighing in at a whopping 22.9 gr.  One of the nice features of this rifle is it shoots #3 Buckshot @ .250" which I bought in a 5 pound box...I'll never have to cast balls for this rifle.  And it is a joy to shoot - sharp report, instant ignition, and zero recoil.
This target doesn't improve my score but it is a better group, I think.  I hope to get out again this month with this rifle - so much fun.
