Lock for Trade Rifle
« on: February 13, 2022, 07:32:18 PM »
I have a friend who is planning to build an English Pattern Trade Rifle. I am assisting with some parts identification and sourcing. For any on the forum who have build one of these, what lock and trigger guard have you selected?

Ron,
I’m building a JJ Henry New English trade rifle. I’m using a Chambers Late Ketland w/ a rounded tail for the lock.  The New English used a scroll guard. I bought one from a friend, but Muzzle Loader  Builders Supply has some. The other guard used by JJ Henry for the Lancaster and Old English models you may be able to get from The Rifle Shop or use one made for a Leman.
Good luck
Kevin

I built a new English  "scroll guard" some years ago & used the Cambers late Ketland, but it looks a bit small on the rifle to me. My Deringer uses a Davis trade gun lock which I think would look much better, but not perform nearly as well unless precisely tuned. Mine is an incredible lock, but too a lot of work by Brad Emig. Money well spent.

My friend and I were of the same opinion about the Late Ketland being small in regards to the original rifles.

The “Old English”‘we’re specified w/ 6” locks. The “New English” or scroll guard rifles were specified w/ 5” locks for which the Chambers Late Ketland fits the bill fine. The scroll guard rifles also used a few different patch boxes
