Recently purchased used lock
« on: February 14, 2022, 03:37:16 AM »

Hello and good evening.  I recently bought a used lock.  I was wondering if anyone on here had any knowledge of the Company that made it, or of the quality of their product overall.  Sparks well and appears to be built well.  I haven't taken it apart as of yet.

The only "Cole" I ever knew that assembled locks was Ted Cole in Pittsburg,Pa. and he passed away before 1980*.It could be someone salvaged some of his parts. He worked with W.G.Sutter of Ruffsdale,Pa. and Sutter made mainsprings out of 1095 for use in these locks and the mechanisms were castings but I have no idea as to who did  them or the location of the foundry.Cole had a booth at Friendship

Thank you.  The Date inside is 1960, not 1980. Sorry, if my picture is a little blurry.

If you use that lock or any other with a mainspring that rides a ramp on the tumbler, take a "q"tip and put a spot of STP or some other "Superslick"lube on the ramp. That will help the performance a bit.

What do you mean by a ramp?

The tumbler's "nose" where the main spring rides.
I use a spot of moly grease.
