My latest hunting bag.
« on: February 15, 2022, 04:23:22 PM »
This is the first time I've posted a topic on this forum. I'm fairly new to muzzleloaders and everything involved, wish I would've started much earlier. The one aspect of this hobby that I really like is working with your hands to make your own gear. I have come to thoroughly enjoy making hunting pouches and learning as I go. I started about two years ago and I'm making them on a regular basis now.
This is an 8 3/4" X 8" veg tanned bag. It's has a full rolled welt and has a full integrated inner pocket 5" deep and a smaller gusseted pocket 3 3/4" deep in front. The flap has a rolled edge and is lined with pig skin. I used a 1" 5-6 oz strap with an old brass harness buckle. I tried it out to see how it would work, I had these items in it and had more room in the inner pocket. I working on my antiquing with a goal of looking used but not abused.

Nicely done!  What weight leather did you use for the body?

Great bag. I like the way you tapered your gusset and rolled the exposed edges. Very well done.

Really nice in every way! You have worked in lots of details, but the result doesn't look fussy, but rugged practicality.  Your strap attachment/reinforcement reminds me of Marcruger, and I think you hit the right note in aging.  I made a similar pouch for my brother, but not so nice.  In use, I thought that outer pocket could be an inch deeper, as in keeping the upper edge higher.  What do you think?  My first pouch was too deep, I was fishing around for stuff, and then my next pouch I overcompensated and I'm conscious of losing something in rugged terrain. They sure are fun to make and use, and I can tell your hands are busy. and skilled as well.   R Mann

I wanted in this bag to have the larger pocket to be in the back to put things in that are not used with each shot. Putting a gusset on the front pocket give the user easier access to what he needs for each shot. The way the flap is attached at the top helps to hold it closed when walking.
Thank you for the kind words RMann!

Very nice and careful work.  If you skive your bindings and turns down it will remove some the bulk in those areas.

Thanks Hawkeye! I don't use any sort of tool to put a rolled edge on the flap. I use two rows of stitching to attach the edge.
