Repro Rutherford County NC (Jesse McGlamery) Shot Pouch
« on: February 19, 2022, 03:16:30 AM »
Just finished a close version of the McGlamery bag from Jim Webbs book. I got to see the original pouch at a showblast year, and put some time in getting this pretty close. The strap js an exact reproduction of the original (woven by Pam Hutton) and the horn is a Tim Crosby horn)

Its about 7x7, one pocket on the inside back, 3/4oz vegtan, waxed linen thread. It is a turned and welted construction. The top lip of the opening is rolled and sewn as well.

I spent my college years in Cleavland, Rutherford and Catawba Counties, so this bag seemed like a great fit. Should match up with my kibler smr (roughly approximating a Nc Appalachian school SMR)  just about perfectly. Thanks for looking!

The horn looks better with the bag and they do look good together. Would be neat to see them with the rifle.

I went back on forth on that for a while. I ended up using these pass through straps. It allows me to remove or adjust the strap relatively simply. Once i confirm the right length for my various hunting clothes, i'll cut the strap down and cover the ends in leather end caps.

Looks great.  How did you attach the strap?

"Hunting pouch" and "shot pouch" or "shooting bag" are are early(18th and early 19th century)  terms used to describe small bags used to hold just what you need to shoot.

"Shot snakes" "shot pouch" and "ball bag" are terms for the leather container used to hold shot or lead balls. They tend to be later in time (18teens to early 20th century).

Hunting bags, shooting bags, (and later possibles bag) stayed on through the 19th century, when the bags became larrger and held more stuff for shooting competitions or extended hunting trips, while" shot pouch"largely sifted to the molded leather container. Sorry for the confusion in my post.
