I See Your 5 And Raise You 1 :) (Painted Horn W/Six Bands)
« on: February 24, 2022, 06:47:11 PM »
I was just finishing this up when I saw Don's post so just for the heck of it I added two more bands.
It's about 12 1/2" around the outside curve and 11 tip-to-tip. The Walnut butt is hollowed out about 3/4ths its length, held in by 3 steel pins and it is 2 1/4" wide. The tip is a two part made of antler, it is pinned to the horn with 3 steel pins Each band was heated, pressed on and are held in place with 3  pins each.  The color is three coats of "Sea Green" Milk paint sand back between each coat, the last with 220. Then it was finished with Brown shoe polish and the bands were added.

I must confess, I'm not a big fan of banded horns but this one really appeals to me. Great job!

O, it is on! Really nice work. I have painted horns in the past based on seeing some of your posts. Some with bands. I really like the contrast. This horn is great. I know some say bands were to protect the horn from wearing through, but a piece of leather sewed on would do that. I’m of the opinion that it is for looks. After all, if you are selling horns you have to have something the customer wants. Same today. Tim, yours will have PMs wanting to buy filling your box.

That is fantastic! Both the design and colors are perfect.  I would think getting all those bands to fit just so is a trick.

Thanks Guys, I've seen a couple of original horns that have five bands on them and one neat one that had two or three in place and ghosts where had been two or three more.
Joe I had to make the smallest band out of a solid piece of horn.
