World War I bag and horn set (hear me out)
« on: February 26, 2022, 04:27:12 AM »
A few years ago TC Albert and Tim Crosby did a series of bag and horn sets that told a story.  One set had a depression era theme.  Their work really inspired me and I love the idea of building a set around a story.

I was also inspired by images in the Foxfire books of folks using longrifles well into the 20th century and at the same time I was reading a lot on World War I.

So the story is a young man returns home from the trenches and recycles some of his items into a muzzleloading rig. The bag is an original WWI era mess kit bag, the knife is also original. The horn is an antique I refurbished for use.  The set also includes an antique cap tin. The strap and buckle are from an old harness. I made the 40 grain measure from antler and the nipple pick.

Sold me on the story there Cory. They have never quit using muzzleloaders here in the southern Appalachians. I really don't think they were never outdated. Nice story.

Kind Regards

A bag set with a story (real or fiction it doesn't matter) are seriously cool. Thank you for putting it together and posting it.

Muzzleloading rifle... WW1...

Seems to me there was a fellow who enjoyed shooting muzzleloaders, served in WW1... Even made kind of a name for himself while he was abroad. Think there was even a movie about it.

Looks real to me, maybe just a little dirtier/used looking, then again if it were 1918 it would look new.  Nicely done.

The bag looks a little darker out of that sunlight.

Thanks

The one thing I did not do that I wanted to was make the powder measure out of an original shell casing. But I could not find one for the life of me.

 8) 8) 8).. gotta agree with Mike From OK,... the boys from around Pall Mall in Fentress Co., who liked to have shootin' matches with cousin Alvin, might just have made their selfs something like that gear,.. !!! .. regards,.. CCF...

CJS - that's a stellar set. I "up- cycled" a ton of military gear into my muzzleloading/mountain man fantasies as a youth. You run what you brung.

This kind of combination of conjecture, documentation and story is what makes this culture tick.  Well thought out and deserving of many good years of use.
