I made one once about 35 years ago. Used a vixen file like Bob Roller mentioned to repurpose a octagon barrel into a tapered oct to round trade gun barrel including the wedding band. Made everything else from scratch except the lock and screws. Just about anything can be done when you have no money and a surplus of spare time.

You know the more I think about it, this is no different(To me) than say ornately carving a Rifle stock, or engraving all the hardware. It’s taking a rifle to the next level.
I’ve been working on cars/welding all my life, and metal is an easier medium for me to work with, rather than wood.
If I find a good cheap barrel to practice on I might try it. I guess I could buy a piece of solid octagon stock but it would be pretty silly if it came out nice with no hole to shoot it with.  :)

I have done it.  I did it much like Dave Person suggested except that I just used a coarse file instead of a grinder.  I was reducing weight and shifting the balance back towards the muzzle some.  Worked out great!

One thing I forgot to mention is that Vixen files come or came as both flat and half round.Maybe the half round would be a better  tool than the flat one but it is also a good idea to have both if you want this kind of exercise.It may also be a good idea to make sure your own physical condition is good before taking on this job with any file regardless of how aggressive the cut of the file may be.
