Basic black

I almost threw this one away about 9 times. Flap gave me fits. Still have a few details left before it's finished... Keeper on the strap, maker's mark, etc...

Pouch with single main pocket, 7" wide by 5" deep with rolled welt. Constructed of 3-4 oz veg tan. Strap is 6 oz veg with a forged iron buckle from Crazy Crow. (I won't be buying anymore of them BTW)

Stitching is a mix of linen and hemp. Commercial dye and finish.

Very basic and black.

Thanks Tim. I was going to try and keep it as low key as possible... But I decided the racing stripes (or whatever they're called) would be a nice, subdued touch.

I'm thinking of pairing up a horn with it. But the only real candidate I have on hand is light brown/white. Not real sure how well they would pair up. I would probably have to get creative with the dye job and/or shoe polish... Bit above my pay grade at the moment.

I like the results.  Nice clean lines and, if doing living history, could be useful for a variety of time periods.

Thanks guys. Frankly I'm not very good at this. But each attempt yields more lessons... Mainly on what works and what doesn't.

I like this shape but I think I'll go a bit bigger on dimensions with the next try... Also thinking about making the back and the flap from one piece... Or I might try a Virginia pouch from one piece.

I was a little tired of the varying shades of brown available to me so I decided to try black. If I had vinegaroon on hand I would've given it a try, but I didn't. So black pro dye was what I went with. I figured black was a safer bet than red, yellow, blue or green. Lol

I'm not sure I'll make another entirely black bag. I may use black for accent or trim but the whole bag being black is fairly limiting... If I do make another I may add some "tooling" to the flap and some fancier edge binding (scallops or something) to dress it up.

A bag is to a horn what a frame is to a painting (in my opinion).  A bag does not need to be flashy if you have a nice horn to "frame".  I have gotten simpler in design as I make more bags.  A really fancy horn on a really fancy bag can fight each other visually.  Sometimes fancy relief carving gets lots on a really curly piece of maple too. 

Nothing wrong with a well-constructed, well-finished, unadorned bag with good architecture.  Simple also leaves less chance for the "historically correct police" to complain about something.
