Can a list of currently active lock makers be posted here?  Leave me off because I am not active now.

I’ll start with the obvious.

Chris Laubach
Jim Chambers
Jim Kibler
L&R
R.E. Davis
L. C. Rice?
The Rifle Shoppe
Jack Brooks?

I don’t know if you wanted more specificity Bob, like makers from scratch perhaps?

The list might also include a list of lock assemblers, or lock kit assemblers. Brad and Shane Emmig (sp) also come to mind.

Pete Allen?
Pete is no longer making locks and doesn’t intend to sell his business, from what I’ve heard. His prerogative, of course.

I'm pretty certain Stan Hollenbaugh is no longer making locks.  Though he has a full website up and running, I have tried for about a half year to get a response, but no success.

Last evening I called "The Gun Works" in Springfield Oregon.  They have the Pete Allen locks listed for sale.  Of course that doesn't mean that Pete is still making them?
However I asked if they still had them in stock and they said they did.  I don't have any idea who, if not Mr Allen is assembling them or from who's castings.
Just posting this as information, especially simce a few of you have expressed such esteem for the product.
Hope that helps,

I bought a half stock cap lock rifle in the early 1970’s.  The lock has an engraving of “North Star Arms” encircling a five pointed star.  Anyone have any history on that lock.  Thanks, Bill

Caywood and The Rifle Shoppe are others offering locks or casting sets.
Chris Hirsch offers sets of castings. I believe Ron Scott and Jack Brooks as well.

I think that would be North Star Trading Co, owned by the now deceased "Curly" Gostomsky.I also think it was in Ohio and then sold and moved West, maybe to California. If anyone has more to add please do.

Thanks Bob.  I bought the .45 cal rifle from a guy in southern Minnesota who may have put it together from parts.  The barrel is straight octagonal 1 inch and has an engraving of the caliber and the words “The Plainsman” on it.  The stock is plain with no cheek rest a brass end plate and looks like a pewter nose piece?

Here is what I found on an old Gunauction listing:

"Hello, I saw your rifle on auctionarms, and thought I could give you a little history on it. I'm quite sure that it was made by a local gunsmith in Western Minnesota in a small town called Ortonville, just 5 miles from my house. I've got one just like it, and know of several other local people here that also have them. The gunsmith's shop is known as "North Star Arms", and I purchase my muzzleloading supplies through him. I bought one of his plainsman rifles at an auction in a neighboring town. I recognized it as one of his, so I took it to him to get some history on mine. He removed the barrel and the serial number on the bottom side of the breech end was 80. He told me that he would have put #80 together in the early 60's. He also said that he made many of them for Dixie Gun Works in the 60's. I believe he told me he made somewhere around 900 of them in all. Mine shoots very good, but it was in very good condition when I bought it about 6 years ago, and I keep it that way. I really like the lock on mine. It is quiet, crisp and smooth. Much better than any Thompson Center, Lyman, or CVA locks on my other muzzleloaders. Thought you'd like some history. If you take off the barrel and get the serial number, I could check with him to find out the approximate year that he put it together.
