Percussion caps
« on: March 08, 2022, 11:21:00 PM »
Hi everyone, to make a long story short I recently bought a Bob Tingle made 11ga percussion shotgun to hopefully use for turkey hunting. I have everything i need to go pattern and learn the gun except percussion caps. I'm not really sure where to find them, all of the local shops i have visited in Central PA have none and it looks like most of the online stores are sold out or not available. Any suggestions on stores in or around Central PA that might have some?

Probably these caps will have to be shipped to you.Try Log Cabin Shop in Lodi,Ohio 1-330-948-1082.
Shortages and Out of Stock are the new reality now,Here in Huntington WVa gas went from 379.9 to 409.9 overnight.
Does anyone have any idea about the shelf life of percussion caps when stored in a building that gets very hot and
very cold and everything in between??

The venders at Friendship were rationing percussion caps to 500 last year at the shoot.

To answer Bob Roller's question about shelf life, if they don't get wet they last a LONG LONG time. I have caps that are from the early 70's that were stored in a unheated or cooled shop in humid North Carolina they stayed in those conditions for 30 years until I moved.  I don't think I ever had one misfire. Shot some not too long ago to empty a revolver. I'd think percussion caps in a tin box would be more protected than centerfire primers in the cardboard and plastic boxes. I've got lots of those from the 70s stored in the same shop that I still use. I now store all my powder and primers in climate controlled area.

Sorry, as I am not a "cap-lock" guy are they like powder and can't be sent through the mail? I have a couple hundred I would be happy to mail you if its possible to do so.

You might try Fort Chambers Black Powder Gun Shop - Chambersburg, PA - (717) 263-2223

Give them a call and see what, if anything, they have on hand.

Happy Hunting,

I bought some at Hunters Rendezvous back in October last year:

 https://www.huntersrendezvous.com/

Unfortunately Sheldon Royal who owned the shop died a year ago but the shop is still open. Not sure what is involved in having them shipped though. Cabella's and Bass Pro both had them in January here in NH.

The Walmart here either never stocked them or stayed sold out, they had a spot on the shelf marked for them. The local Academy Sports and Outdoors had them for $6 a tin the last time I went by for but are showing that they are sold out now when I just checked on line.

Tao-O-Cap reborn.  I still have my Forester Tap-O-Cap I bought back in the 70's when percussion caps were impossible to find in the North of B.C.
Here's a newer rendition.
I did test the kid's toy caps as the fire producer, but changed to a detonating compound I could make myself. We won't go into that, but the formula was presented in
"A Pictorial History of the Underhammer Gun", by Herschel C. Logan.

Yep, with the current price of gas it might be cheaper to use the USPS and pay the hazmat fees.  :-\

The gouger's are having a great time.Loaded ammunition is not mailable from a Post Office but lead balls and bullets plus brass
is legal. There are lists in all Post Offices that tell what can and can't be mailed.I don't remember seeing caps or primers on that
list but in the days before FedEx and UPS both caps and primers came by Railway Express in secure boxes usually made from wood.
I had some surplus primers and sold them to two different shops at the old retail prices and they were glad to get them and will do
OK with them.Percussion caps here have never been an inventory item nor have flints for gun locks.

I just stumbled into anther forum and some of the answers about shipping percussion caps by the USPS were Federal crimes.
Telling the USPS clerk they are candy "mints".Ditto for primers. This man may find out about the food menu at the Hotel Graybars
if this is caught.I hear the room service at the Graybars is atrocious and after check out the ownership of a gun is forbidden.

I sent a package to a friend this morning and asked about shipping percussion caps and he said NO EXPLOSIVES of any kind in the U.S.Mail.I told him they did the same thing as a primer in a cartridge and shipping loaded ammunition is also forbidden.NO POWDER,CAPS.PRIMERS,sounds simple to me.
