The cobbler's shoe
« on: March 24, 2022, 10:39:36 PM »
Some folks like guns with a story, so here is the story associated with this Jaeger rifle.  The very first really serious replication of an original I ever made was a Jaeger; this was in 1974.  The original was owned by Dalton Wendling of Macungie, PA.  He gave me a very short (Stutz) Jaeger and said, "If you can build this, you can build guns."   Well, I built the gun, and Dalton was pleased with my work.  So now, i was hooked on gun building.  Over the years, I wanted to build a really nice Jaeger for myself.  In 2001 I ordered a set of Bill Young chiseled Jaeger parts from the Rifle Shoppe.  I also ordered the parts for a 826 chiseled Jaeger lock.  My rifle business was going so well and I was so busy that I never got to build the gun for myself.   As i got older, I purposed to build the Jaeger when I got to gun # 300.  Well gun #300 turned out to be a nice iron mounted 58 cal. for a close friend.  I continued on filling orders and was approaching gun # 400.  The close friend said that he also wanted that milestone gun, but I told him that 400 was already accounted for.   I passed the 400 mark, but kept that # for my gun.   So at the beginning of March, I decided to put the gun together.   Back about the time I got the parts I asked Don Getz to make me the barrel.   Don Passed, and his son John filled the order with a beautiful 28" 60 cal. barrel.  Fred Miller put the barrel in the only piece of Euro Walnut that he had at the time.  The wood is rather plain with little color variation, but hard and dense.   The carving patterns were on the ALR board back in 2010 and I printed them out for later use.  It finally all came together yesterday in this little 7 lb. package.  The cobbler now has his shoe... Ron

Ron I'm not one for a lot of bling. But these jaegers and especially your latest is very impressive indeed.  That is going to be one great hunting gun...  Oldtravler

No!  No!  No!  It is ALL wrong, and you need to give that to me and try again!

Really, a very stunning Jaeger, beautifully made, and I know you will be proud to carry and use that for a long, long time.

I've been trying to make one for myself with a beautifully swamped .62 cal barrel, wood and chiseled brass parts from Ron Scott.  But at my current rate of moving around, I just cannot do it justice at this time.

I am glad that one of my favorite cobblers finally has a decent pair of shoes to go dancing in.

Very nice rifle and great story to go with it.  Sounds like it was time for you to take care of one for yourself.

Great story and great gun. Also great workmanship which proves that even plain wood can make a very elegant great gun. Very nice in all respects.

That is very nice. Can I ask how you did the finish (both stock and barrel). It's very close to what I want to achieve for mine.

Ron,
That is a beautiful gun! I never was much of a Jaeger fan but after seeing yours, one of Ed Wenger's (and a couple others) I have changed my mind. Really appealing work.

Beautiful rifle, I normally like clean line and little else yours is the exception. I only hope in my remaining years I can achieve a fourth of what you have demonstrated here.
