Fusil de Chasse

Quick fusil de chasse question. Is the trigger guard lightly inlet or surface mounted? In various pictures I have looked at I could interpret it either way.

Surface mounted.....the originals have a slightly concaved lower surface, not like the flat bottom castings we use today.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Thanks Mike, it sits pretty flat but now perfect. I'll take my Dremel and grind away at it to give it a bit of a concave profile where it needs it.

Mike is 100% correct.  I've had a couple of antique French guards here that I've used for new stuff, most recently for a big long club stock, and they all had very thin finials that were dished on the inside to essentially 'wrap around' the stock curvature.  First time I saw one first-hand, after seeing all the modern commercial stuff for years with the thick, flat bottom finials, I was quite surprised to say the least.
Strange women lying in ponds, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government!

It's surprising how thin those old French mounts were.

Mike and Eric, I learned something new. I am aware that they should be surface mounted, but I never knew about the concave undersides. Thanks.

Another thought occurred to me. What about the tang on the butt plate? It would certainly speed up production.

I would be just guessing that the side plate wasn’t inlet as well?

Sideplate is inlet. Historically it's the flat simple one, not the fancy one TOTW sells with the scroll tail on it.

I have the sideplate inlet - so that is good! And not the one with the tail.

I wish I could actually hold an authentic or authentically built one. So hard with nothing to go by except pictures and advise, though both are extremely helpful and much appreciated.
