ALR Members meeting in Kentucky?
« on: October 15, 2009, 05:01:34 PM »
For me, one of the highlights of attending Dixon's and the CLA show is the opportunity to meet and talk with other ALR members, see their work in person, discuss techniques, receive critique on my work, etc.

I know there are at least a few ALR members in or near Kentucky.  I live in Lexington.  I know of at least 6 or 8 other ALR members scattered around the state for sure and there are bound to be more.

Is there any interest in meeting once in a while to show work in progress, discuss LR building, etc?  Maybe over the winter months, after the hunting and football seasons.  We could pick a town centrally located to those interested and meet on a Saturday afternoon.

Let me know if you are interested.  No commitments and no promises, we'll see how it goes.  I'll need to know your general area (town or county) and your email address, if it isn't in your profile.  Reply here or send me an email.  I hope we can get this going.  (Dan, I know you are in!)

It just dawned on me....  we certainly would not exclude anyone from outside of Kentucky, it's just a distance thing.  If you want to make the trip, come on.

Sounds like fun to me.

Just a thought - there are also a few nice regional events over the winter - like Mel Hankla's CLA mini show at Lake Cumberland the first weekend in February.  Also a nice indoor trade fair - I think over near Larwenceburg KY now (used to be in Perrysburg) - a few others too.

If folks can't make it for a Saturday afternoon, maybe we could at least meet up at one of these events.

Sure, now you bring up the idea, after I spent a week on the Bourbon tour last month.  It might work out to do it at the Spring meet at the Museum, after it or lunch time at the show.  It's 10 or 11 hours drive to Lex for me.

It's one thing for people within a 100 mile radius to drive for an afternoon meeting.  It's a far different thing for those driving 5 or more hours.  That needs to be a weekend event hosted at someone's property with a cookout or pot luck, and motel reservations or camping nearby.  You need to decide small or whole hog.

I'm in Louisville and would be up for it.

Remember, we have the Frazier Historical Arms Museum.

I live just outside Louisville. The Frazier Museum would be a good place to visit. I could
probably talk with the Assistant Curator to see if a group visit could be organized. A lot
of nice rifles to see, as well as the British Arms and Armor.

Ok, looks like there is some interest.  Here's some additional random thoughts.

While meeting at the CLA, Dixon's, Log Cabin, Friendship and various other shows is fun and certainly should continue, the inherent problem with those meetings is the folks with tables can't leave their table and the rest of us are wanting to see the show.

I'm not interested in organizing a multi-day event, the idea was just for the folks within reasonable driving distance to meet once in a while, maybe have lunch and visit a while to discuss building long rifles.

The suggestion of visiting area museums or historical sites is a good one.  And these places may also have a meeting area that we could use.

I'll get out the map and some pushpins and find a spot fairly central to those who respond and get something set up for later this fall.  Stay tuned......

I live in Indiana's first state capital in Corydon so Lexington and Friendship are almost equal in distance. This is a great idea for it's always better to talk to someone in person if feasible rather than always punching keys.

It would take me a while to come up with details but there might be a window of opportunity on the Saturday afternoon during the middle of the nine day NMLRA Gun Smithing Seminar in Bowling Green for combining a visit to the Seminar with a chance for folks to have lunch and chat.

That would always be the first Saturday in June and classes for the day end at lunch time. ALR members could stop in and see the classes for a bit, say 11-12, then go on to lunch somewhere near campus.

Of course Bowling Green may be too far from the cluster of map pins!
