New jaeger
« on: April 08, 2022, 01:13:02 AM »
Thought I would bore you all with my new Jaeger. This project revolved around a plank of Paradox walnut. It was long enough to accommodate a 25 inch pipe. I had Ed Rayl make me a .61 cal swamped barrel which he based on a Pistor pattern. The lock is a Chambers round faced Jaeger.
I forged the butt plate and chiseled the side plate. I had never done either in steel.  Also made the nose cap and the toe plate and the sights.
The thimbles have been laying around in a drawer, it was time to use them.
I had forged a trigger guard, but it did not seem robust enough. So I used this one I got from MBS.
I was hoping to make a rifle to be indicative of  what a provincial smith might have made.
Ultimately this is a hunting rifle which will lend itself to Midwest tree stand hunting.
I am looking for a piece of red leather for the flint. That is why I didn't have one on.

Jaegers aren't my thing but that is nice.  Really well done.  Thanks for sharing.

Guido,
Very nice! Not overstated. I think Jaegers are very cool, but way too ornate for the most part.
This one turn my crank!
Good work my friend!

Darn that's nice.  Love those short barreled guns.  Really like what you did with the cheekpiece.

Beautifully done Alacran!
I love the wood color, the styling, and the carving.  It has a German "in your face" boldness that you cannot fake.  Well done!

That alacran, is really NIFTY. The wood colour looks "right" on that rifle.
I'll bet it would work really well in a canoe, too.

Thanks to all for the kind words. As far as the color of the wood goes, all I did was to apply the formula that Smart dog posted about a month ago, 50% turpentine, 25% tung oil and 25% polyurethane. I think I applied it 5 or 6 times I lost count.
The metal I rust blued after polishing with abrasives and finally pumice. Then I used a 3M pad with naval jelly to remove the bluing.
Dave Rase had touched on this a week or so ago. He also had a thread on it a couple of years back regarding a Harpers ferry rifle he did I believe.
All the furniture was then carded with a Grobet carding wheel. I did not use the naval jelly on the barrel. I just evened it out with the 3m grey pad then carded it with the wheel.
I like to thank Smart Dog and Dave Rase on sharing their expertise. Again, thanks for the kind words.

Very nice, understated hunting rifle. Exactly what I intend for myself.

I have a 30" barrel, 62 cal. The steel furniture, similar to yours and several walnut blanks my father milled 30 years ago.

Again, good looking rifle.

I have a 25 inch barrel that needs to be put into a piece of wood.

Had not seen that rifle before. Interesting similarities, I was trying to convey early 18th century, so I guess I was on the right path.

I like building German guns!
You did a great job with that one! Free form, not bound to any real school! That is the way I like to build! The builder has total control of the design!
I'm right with you!
