Tansel bag and horn set
« on: April 12, 2022, 08:22:06 AM »
Here are a few images from an upcoming Muzzleloader article about a Tansel bag and horn set. I made these for the story.  The new issue of magazine should be out the end of this month.

Tim,  I like the horn and the bag both.  I particularly like the large pinking (triangles) around the edges.  James Levy

I like the sawtooth edge on the flap and welt. I had considered doing something similar as I was tired of fighting bound edges and didn't want to just leave a live or burnished edge.

Beautiful work.

Ok, want to give away the secret; how did you get that edge? Sew the strip in then turn it inside out and clip? This Pic looks like there is no welt, if that's what it's called.

Thanks again for all of the good words everyone, and you are right on both counts Tim. The welt strip is pinked first with a button chisel, then sewn into the inside out bag, then its turned. The flap just has a pinked edge. Its two piece bag, the flap and back panel being one piece and the front panel the other. The pinking on the flap stops where it  folds. The pinked welt begins there making it look sort of continuous. The spacing on the pinking is all laid out with dividers then cut with the button chisel and cutting board.

The original this bag is based on was sold by Morphys Auctions fairly recently as part of the Bill Meyers collection. On that set the bag, accoutrements and horn are all said to be made by the Tansels too. However I based the horn on my set on a totally different Tansel piece. I love the completely backwards "Epluribus" because brings quite a few questions to mind as does the inscribed poem.

As usual Tim, you have created another beautiful set that just goes together. I always look forward to getting the Muzzleloader Magazine just to see what you have come up with. Was this pouch a copy of an original ? What were the dimensions of the pouch ? You have that Tansel style horn down perfect, it was just made for that pouch and they compliment each other.
Kind Regards

Frank, it is based on an original but only from pictures of it.
It’s not over big, maybe 8x8 or so, I can send you the pattern
If you like. Happy to.

Thanks again for the kind words from everyone about how it turned out.
