Vienna Jaeger
« on: April 16, 2022, 07:37:35 PM »
This is the first rifle I have completed for myself in over a decade. Hopefully it will stimulate me to do a bit more shooting. This is based on a set of castings from my unsigned Vienna Jaeger (original 1740s), a Rice barrel, Chris Laubach lock, my  CNC triggers and an Oregon grown English walnut blank. The architecture, carving and lock engraving are based on elements from the three Vienna flintlocks in my collection, somewhat simplified .The muzzle cap and ramrod tip are horn. My photo booth is not available, so  you have to put up the the quick photos done outdoors. I tend to work with a recognized style, keeping  the architecture and decoration reasonably similar .

Quality work Ron, as always.  Congrats on stepping out and building one for yourself.  As you, me and many others on here can attest, the best work many artists create is usually owned by somebody else. Quick question, those castings look very well defined, was there a lot of clean up engraving you had to do to get them looking that nice?

Special - elaborate enough, for sure. The carving, so crisp & petite - love it.

Outstanding. Nicely done. I had to think a bit if I liked the "flat" topped carving. Decided I did indeed like it. Gives a really crisp look. Very clean work.

The basic relief carving pattern was borrowed from a Felix Meier Jaeger. It exhibits the flat top, shallow depth that was frequently used during that time period. This local English walnut is not a dense as those I import from Armenia, but did have a smooth texture for carving. I'm looking forward to a future project using the Stockmar (Suhl) pattern rifle as a model. It exhibits fully developed Rococo art.

Hank,   I built this somewhat out of the norm for a Jaeger Rifle I wanted a 40 cal rifle, so I bought one of the Little Fellers barrels from Rice (34 inches long) and used the somewhat longer stock blank I had in inventory. The casting are from a previous seminar that had some flaws I dealt with. The balance is very pleasing.

John,  This set of castings was one of the poorer in the batch. Some elements of the relief art was pretty fuzzy. I spent a fair amount of time re-establishing the details and stippling the backgrounds. The butt plate took most of a day.

Outstanding rifle for sure and like Heinz, let's see what it does at the range. Is the top cap on the butt plate inlaid or overlaid?

Wow, another example of how good todays craftsmen can  equal or better yesterdays efforts. Very nice. You don't have to be an expert to see quality like this.

Ron, it is such a pleasure to see your work and I congratulate you for taking the time to build one for yourself.  With that barrel in .40 cal, the rifle will have a great feel for offhand shooting.  I like the way the blue/black barrel compliments the colour and figure of the English walnut, and contrasts nicely with the polished lock and furniture.  I trust that you will find the rifle a joy to shoot.  Thanks for the expose.
