A new Scrimshawed Powder Horn
« on: April 19, 2022, 02:45:43 AM »
I finished making this scrimshawed Powder Horn today (started it yesterday).
It measured 11.25" from spout tip to base plug. The plug is old pine which is pegged in, and I forged a staple from an old nail for it. The base measures 3" across and 2" high and can wear on the left or right.
Took twice as long to scrimshaw as to carve and plug!

PS: Didn't last long did it. TC

Looks super Bob.  I really like bold engraving.  The colors came our really nice too, especially the spout end.  You are indeed amazingly fast if you can knock one out in 2 days.  God Bless,   Marc

Thanks folks. The first day was about 4 1/2 hours to carve the shape and plug it. The shape is pretty simple but I just wanted to make a horn and started at it and let it take its course. I also thought I would make the plug flush since all my other horns have been lobed. That was a bit of a time saver as well.
Day two was from 8am to 5pm doing the scrimshaw at the dining room table. No interruptions and I even stopped for a lunch break. It’s like therapy for me.
I wanted to keep this one also but bills need to be paid, darn it…
Anyway it’s going to someone in New York State who I am glad is making it her own.
