Heck of a nice D. Border, Bedford lock with the famous 'Bedford Rat Tailed' lock plate. Thank you for showing it. Do you have the rest of the rifle? Just asking for my friends here on the Forum.

Nice lock and I do enjoy seeing the internals. It is well made for sure. I am curious about the cut out for the drum. I would love to see how the barrel fit there.

I have wondered about the flintlock fence remains myself, but it seems to have been a decorative feature. Here are two Borders that have the same thing.

Looks like the faux pan fence would provide some protection for the wood at the barrel breech

No it is not a new stock. I have been told and I believe this rifle was constructed from canalized parts from other rifles. I have removed the barrel( octagonal to round smooth bore) it is fastened with pins via staple, and soldered brass pieces drilled for through pins. There is one staple that has been removed that doesn't lineup to the existing pin holes.

I do believe this rifle was made during the latter half of the 19TH century.

Here is a lock on a William Defibaugh that has the same flintlock fence

Notice the thin forward shield on the Defibagh lock, evidently intended to keep the forward wood from being scorched. This may well be the reason for this unusual feature.

Interestingly, there is an apparently orphaned D. Border lock for sale on ebay right now. Not sure how you value a separate piece like this, other than it is out of my budget for a lock.

VERY basic lock mechanism and the only way to make it even more simple would be to not use a bridle.In the 1960's I made a few Bedfords for a man in Virginia whose name has long faded from my memory,Larry?

.I got the hammers from a man in Ohio and I think his name was Ken Roethlesberger.Does anyone make a Bedford lock now?

For that price, I'm guessing someone has a D Border rifle without a lock.
Either that, or I'm really out old touch on the value of old signed locks.

I don't think so. It is very similar, but some of the ageing marks are different.
